John Stewart 1881 - 1934 ? can't find death or 1901 census
« on: Tuesday 09 June 09 17:46 BST (UK) »
yup, me again

my Great Grandfather is causing me problems, I have his birth and marriage records.
B 20 apr 1881    32 Glasgow Rd Rutherglen to William STEWART and Elizabeth STEWART (Ne CRAIG)

on the 1891 census at Greenleeshill farm (which, for anyone following my seach is no surprise)

Married Helen Watson BURNS on 5 Oct 1906 , his address is shown as 76 Horne St. His profession is shown as an Iron turner (journeyman).

in the 1901 census, the rest of the family ARE shown at 76 Horne St, but not John. (unless, as usual, I'm missing something obvious, again)

I've been told he died in 1934, but can't corroborate that and I cannot find a death cert on SP, due to the common nature of the name, (even just in my family we are littered with John Stewarts) in the search results, nothing QUITE matches.

So, if anyone could assist me in the search for him on the 1901 and/or the death cert, I'd be massively thankful.

(and this is just the Stewart side, I've my mother's side to come yet, and that takes me into England and to Co Down (so far))

Still not found anything , though I've now been told that he MIGHT have been in the military... that's it, no idea of arm, branch, regiment.... so, no idea where to start on this one....

Hi CS

Just a thought - have you got Helen's death cert?  At least that might indicate if he was alive or dead at a particular date and an area.  Also, any marriages for his children which might say if he was deceased at a particular time.

Re Military ~ He might have volunteered for the Boer War and not arrived home in time for the 1901 census.

Do you have access to the WW1 records - service records, medal cards, etc.?

Gadget,

Helen died a widow in 1945, and I was told today again that he died when my Grandfather (b 1920) was 14, which puts us back at 1934.

I've had a look on Ancestry but cannot fnd any appropriate military records showing an enlistment before 1901 (though I did think the 2nd Boer War might be a possibility)

Regards

Did they remain in the same area betwen 1920 and 1945?

Where there any children who married between 1920 and 1934 tht you can check up their marriage cert?

I think it's a process of narrowing down the probable location and date and these would help.

Gadget, I agree entirely, unfortunatly the information I have on the family from surviving relations is very sketchy,

I know the family didn't move from the Springburn/St Rollox area, even now my Grandmother is in Milton, nearby.

My grandparents married in 1944, John is shown on the Cert as "Deceased" address is 6 Crichton Street, (My Grandfather and his Brother (John Burns STEWART b 1914) are shown at that address, it is also the address on Helen's Death cert the following year)

John's eldest son, William was born 6 Apr 1907 also in Springburn

I did try searching all Springburn/St Rollox John Stewart deaths between 1920 and 1945 and couldn't come up with anything that matched...

Bear in mind that if he died in hospital the death could be registered in the same district as that hospital.
