Just before I head off,

There is a tad but that is probably from the original scan... as you say you haven't rescanned it we shall never know.
Its a good photo though and I'm trying to work out where it is from the signpost, must be very close to me!

Please acknowledge when a restorer works on your photos, it can take hours for them to work their magic

Please scan at 300dpi minimum to help save the restorers eyesight.

Hi Jcred,

It is Elmfield which was on the corner opposite Carfax and Windsor County Girls School in 1949.  I went there in 1948 and this picture was taken by a school photographer.

I have a hunch that they have now pulled it down, but the roundabout by the long walk is still there, just as you go onto the Egham, Ascot, Winkfield roundabout depending which exit you take, ie if you are going to home farm or the Saville gardens, it is that corner there, the old road goes up to the hospital and the other road to the castle.

Hope I have confused the issue, but I cannot now remember the names of the roads except Alma road which was there somewhere.

We moved away in 1951 long time ago! Haven't been back for ages.

Hi Jcred,

How lovely, I loved living in Windsor, it was an even more beautiful town in those days!

Small world isn't it!  So glad it is not forgotten. Is any of it still there??

Rescan your photo at 300dpi and make sure you select best quality/no compression
Save your scan. Right click on the properties of the photo and see what it says, it should tell you 300dpi and xxxkb but it will than likely say x.xxMB!

Open your new scan in Irfanfiew
Go to Image> Resize/Resample image
In the LEFT hand column
1. make sure Preserve Aspect ratio is checked
2. Alter the width, usually around 1000 pixels should result in a file under 500kb if scanned at 300dpi
3. press ok
DO NOT USE THE RIGHT hand column to make adjustments... it isn't accurate enough. Thats why we get sooooo many scans that are 10-50kb on here!

Go to file>save as
4. make sure "save quality" slider is right over to good!
5. rename the file
6. click save

now if you right click on the new file, check the new size, if it is around 480KB then that is brilliant!
n.b if the file is still over 500kb or very near, go back and resize the width down a little more and save as a new file again.

I would suggest you start a new thread to ask for a restore of your mums photo

I hope that helps, I know you want a good restore of your mums photo, which is why I'm trying to explain the difference between a good uncompressed scan at 300dpi and poorly compressed resized scan at 300dpi. There is a world of difference.

For examples of a good scan, take a look at the scans Terry Hastie has posted over the last couple of days, they are brilliant and super to work on and do not hurt the eyes.
Terry will now be able to print off all her restores very large and they will still be clear! ;)

Good luck

Hi folks,

Have kept these instructions most carefully, and I fear I am about to make a fool of myself once again!

I did as suggested and posted a scan on a separate thread at 300dpi but bearing in mind that the restorers like to have a bigger version I have been playing about, trying to understand this sizing lark!

Now the first thing to say is that my screen is not the same as the picture that was kindly posted to help me. The next problem is that when I had done three scans, the one I posted and one at 600 then one at 1200. I checked on the MS photo editor and despite the sizes having gone up they all said 300dpi  ???

So I opened them all in Irfanview and to my horror they now said  72 dpi.  I have been puzzling about his for ages.  They are Mega pixels!  Problem solved I think, but does anyone what a Mega pixel is??

I took the 1200 scan and have tried to resize it, I know it is too big, but I need to understand this thing! If it posts OK I have cracked it. if it doesn't oh well back to the drawing board.  But do please tell me if it is compressed?

You're going to love me for this Rabbit,
but is that the photo you have tried to resize, there....
cos if it is,
Vista 72dpi
Irfanview 72dpi
GIMP 72 dpi
PhotoFiltre 72 dpi...

Think I'll go away and get dinner....

Dinner didn't help, it still comes out the same....
