Rabbit, if you prefer to go to a shop and buy, Novatech has an outlet in Reading and I can thoroughly recommend them (no connections other than a satisfied customer, I usually buy my IT stuff from there or ebuyer)
You can order online through Novatech and either have it delivered or pick it up from the store, they have their own car park so no walking involved. You also have the peace of mind knowing you have somewhere to take it back to if there is a problem.
www.novatech.co.uk  for directions

Another good choice, I was just hoping she didn't end up in that awful shop that starts with PC and ends with World;D
RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

Hi Jcred, Hi Nick,

You see before you a very disheartened Rabbit!  You are right Jcred, that is where I went, came home with a discount on another HP Scanjet.

Now, it is supplied with a two pin plug that wont fit anything, but as it is only an electrical connection, OH plugged it in using the new 'gubbins' and another connector to the plug.  So I loaded the software all ready to astound you all with quality scanning and I cannot get it to work any which way!

Have I got a duff one, or what  :o  What a waste of a day!

Any suggestions ???  It tells me that it cannot detect the scanner ???

First you need to uninstall the old 3500 scanning software. Reboot your pc.

Then follow the quick install instructions that came with the scanner.

Usually you have to insert the software then when it tells you, attach the scanner...
the reason for this is that MS will try to override the HP software and install the basic software and probably miss some of the features off...

If you have problems with the scanner software, VueScan works with most scanners and is in many ways better than the software that comes with most scanners.  Costs$40 though

Hi Rabbit  :)

When you plugged your new scanner in, did it say anything about 'New Hardware detected' or words to that effect?

If you didn't get this message, it might be that your computer is not talking to the new scanner.

Scanners are not really serviceable. The green images are more likely to be from software degradation. I had this recently on a Mustek A3 scanner. Uninstalled it [the software], reinstalled from disc and problem solved.

So J26red is probably giving you good advice.

If you do not have the original disc you can download the driver here:

Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Hi Jcred,

I always uninstall old programmes before installing new ones it is safer by far.

You will be glad to know that the new software reboots the machine before installation, so if you forget [I had already done it] it wont go any further until you have!

I have cracked it, it seems that there was a lose connection, I also found the other bit of wire and plug that were missing so I thought, it was hidden behind all the extra packaging and not with the rest.

It is very hard to get behind my machine which is in a cabinet, you have to be agile to do it but my OH did all the fixings and so now we have lift off!  ;D

Thanks to you all, for all your help I do appreciate it very much.  It all takes up your valuable time and I am so grateful for that help.

Here is my first scan! The software reduces it by half and then as I have not yet found out how to save it to anywhere, I had to reduce it, I did it at 300 dpi, complex software and I am on a steep learning curve.  ::)  I am puzzled why it states 72dpi now though?  This is going to take a while to figure out!  ???
