COMPLETED Llanfabon, Pontypridd
« on: Monday 08 June 09 22:13 BST (UK) »
I would like to look for children of someone who was married in Llanfabon in 1905.

Does anyone know what the reference would be on FreeBMD please?  The surname is Davies so I need all the help I can get.

Thanks in advance.

Dear Nameless,

I would have thought that in 1905 the marriage would most likely be registered in Pontypridd. I believe that this would be volume number 11a.  I know of a marriage in Llanfabon in 1906 and it was registered in Pontypridd.  Llanfabon parish is on the outskirts of Nelson and the local paper (The Methyr Valley Express) has quite a bit of information about the goings on in Nelson.  The marriage may get a mention if they were notable citizens.

Hi just seen this thread.

I have family from Nelson/Llanfabon...the name is Howell.

Where could I get my grubby hands on The Merthyr Valley Express paper archive please, ore? Thanks for posting... I know there is a church in Llanfabon called St Mabon's.

Matt :)

Dear Both,

I have accessed the Merthyr Valley Express in local libraries namely Methyr Tydfil, Tredegar and Bargoed.  Bargoed library has just been demolished and I think the family history stuff has been moved to New Tredegar.  In the paper is the local news from all the towns and villages in the area. The coverage varies but Nelson/Llanfabon has a pretty good column each week.  I have used it extensively to research the Nelson War memorial from World War 1 and it has provided a mass of information.

Going through the columns there are details of marriages, deaths and the social activities of the day.

Llanfabon could have also been on the border of Eglwysilan Parish which was the parish on one side of the River Taf through Pontypridd between Nantgarw up to Ponty Common through to Cilfynydd area.
I dont know where the old border finished..

Reading this thread again, since my last posting I have found Davies ancestors in Llanfabon.

If you think we could be related, I'd like to hear from you :)

Hello,

Our relative was Emily Jane who married John Davies, a Grocer's Haulier on 13 March 1905.  Witnesses were David & Mary Lewis.  They married in Sardis Chapel, Pontypridd.  He was a widower aged 46, his father was Thomas Davies a farm labourer.  I don't know any more about him yet.
Does it ring any bells?
