MATTHEW MILLS & JANE COMPLETED
« on: Monday 08 June 09 21:23 BST (UK) »
Hi.
Can anyone help to find Matthew Mills born 1804 or 1807 Carlisle & Jane born 1807 Carlisle.
They come under Meals in 1841 & Mills in 1851 but disappear after that.  Matthew possibly died in 1862.
Only a short surname but the transcribers have had a problem with it.
Thank You.

They were in Whitehaven- the surname was fine ;)

1861
96 Mount Pleasant
Mathew MILLS 50 Nailor (Journeyman), Carlisle
Jane 52 Gen Dealer, Lancs Wigan

The census registrar has added "Mason" to Matt's occupation.  I believe he must have read the occupation as "Waller" to have reached that conclusion, but it's clearly Nailor :)  I see he was a Nail Maker in 1851 and living at Mount Pleasant.
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Thank you so much. Goodness knows how I could'nt see that. Apart from spelling Matthew instead of Mathew.

Much appreciated.

Matthew Mills was buried 17th Feb. 1862 aged 54 yrs.  He was in the Union Workhouse, Preston Quarter (Whitehaven) at time of death.  Ref: Jac 746 4/G/183 (Common Grave in Church of England burial ground).

A Jane Mills died at Queen St., Whitehaven and was buried 25th Dec. 1872 but she was 73 yrs old so appears to be a bit old for your Jane.

Wow. That is amazing. Thank you so much for the information.  The entry on Jane maybe her - on the 1861 census it states she was born in Wigan but prior to that she was born in county or Carlisle - her birth year has been 1807 1809 & 1811.  A Wigan IGI entry would be 1804 if it was her - so its still a possibility.
Was Jane also in the workhouse when Matthew died in 1862 ?

Once again, thank you very much.

Unfortunately I only have the actual burial details which gives where the person died.  If someone was possibly chronically ill and the family couldn't (or wouldn't) look after them then they went in the local workhouse.

Hi Jo.

Thank you. The children had flown the nest to Durham - so it was just Matthew & his wife with no other relations around that I can find.  So thats probably why he ended up there.

Cheers.

Apparently the daughter of Matthew & Jane Mills  - Mary Ann married William Joyce.  Following William Joyce 1827 Cleator back his parents were a James Joice/Joyce & Elizabeth Logan married at Cleator in 1823.  Elizabeth's birth varies from 1802 - 1807 (can't seem to find out anymore on her) and James possibly dies before 1841 so cannot be definite about his age.

It is possible to tie James & Elizabeth's family to other Joyce families in the Cleator Moor area - who are probably brothers/cousins.

Has anyone seen any information about a Burgoyne (Bergin - or other spellings) Joyce who married at St Bees in 1771. I think he could have been a mariner. Burgoyne is a pretty unusual name & I believe one was born in Whitehaven area about 1810  (according to IGI pedigree file) although cannot find a birth or marriage in 1830 ish for him.

Probably an impossible ask but would appreciate any information.
Thank You
Sandra
