Senator Mccarthy (Either of them)
« on: Saturday 06 June 09 05:48 BST (UK) »
John McCarthy and Catherine Gaffney had at least two sons.  One emigrated to Australia in 1842 (James Florence and my g grandfather) and the other emgrated to America at around the same time.  My family lore has it that the American brother is the father or grandfather of Senator McCarthy, but I have no idea of which Senator, and no knowledge of the emigration, birth or any other details.

Can any one confirm the role of John McCarthy or Catherine Gaffney in the ancestry of either of the US Senators?  I would be very grateful for any assistance.

John McCarthy is very well researched:

http://allenhackworth.com/McCarthy/johnstory.htm

From this it appears very unlikely that he is related to either Senator both of whom were born into devout Catholic families.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

From the above link John McCarthy's family was also Catholic: "His family were staunch Catholics and John was placed in a Catholic school at an early age where he was studying to become a priest."
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

If you go to www.rootsweb.com and search family trees--put in Catherine Gaffney, with spouse John McCarthy.  They have a son, John, who marries Eliza Victoria Telford.  According to this tree, they were married in Canada and moved to Utah.  Could this be the person you are searching?

Aghadowey - my point is that John McCarthy became a Mormon missionary and all of his children were also Mormons. Apart from the information posted by Geneliza it would be a very rare occurrence that within, at most a single generation they would have Catholic descendants - perhaps two generations in the case of Sen. Joseph McCarthy.

I am trying to help pfh2760 with the actual story of  his collateral ancestor. Many of us have chased down such family rumours, and as you know mostly with disappointing results.

However, it would be quite easy to trace his actual descendants since he was an Elder in the Church of the Latter-day Saints to whom most of us are indebted for family history information.

When Eugene McCarthy stood for president it is recorded that some southern voters voted for him, thinking that he was Joseph; the contrast between them could not have been starker, and it is unfortunate that this was not drawn to these voters' attention. The outcome would have been very interesting to say the least!
