Hi

Looking at the 1901 census - there were only 11 entries nationally for the surname CARTNELL none of whom were living in or around Blackpool

There was a Cartnell family in Darwin St Aston Warwickshire.  All born Birmingham

William Cartnell 26  electric tramway constructor
Mary E   22
Mary E  4
Elsie M 3
Rose A  2
May E  7 months
RG13 Piece 2855 Folio 100 Page 11

Possibly somebody with access to the Trade directories for the 1920's -30's may be able to shed more light on it for you

Hi RW,

From the 1924 Kelly's Directory:

"Mrs Cartnell, 38 Albert St, South Shore, Blackpool"

No occupation, business etc listed.  And Bispham is at the north end, not the south - but its a start!  ;)

Hi,

Do you have a first name for your Grandparents and rough dates of birth/ages?  Unfortunately it is one of those surnames that gets frequently mistranscribed on the census.

There are quite a few Cartnells living in the Fylde area on the 1911 census but some of these I suspect were actually Cartmell and variants.  You can check the 1911 census index yourself at www.1911census.co.uk .  Just type in the name Cartnell and Fylde in the residence.  You may recognise some of the names.

Regards,
Mo

One in the phone book archive in Freckleton, near Preston:

"T Cartnell, motor engineer, Preston New Rd, Freckleton"

but as Mo says there are several Cartmells, and this one is in the middle of these others, so I'm a bit unsure...

Here's a 'stray' in Blackburn:
1905 Kelly's:

"Miss Emily Maud Cartnell, confectioner, 55 King William St, Blackburn"

and there seem to be a few in the Liverpool directory but I've not looked at them yet.
