Liney - is there a town by this name?

What about Loch Lihne (pronounced 'Linney') - that's near Fort William. I don't think there's a village or town though .............

One Ancestry tree has the father of my John Layng from 'Liney' as being from Deviston, Erskine, Renfrewshire, Scotland

Not too far from Callander but long way from Loch Lihne

Trees that other folk have produced are not always very accurate. Sometimes they are pure fiction. How far back can you get with documentary evidence yourself?

This could simply be a farm/croft, the surname is largely in the east I see none in Renfrew, do you have the parents and the year?

I think the info below is documented except where question  marks present, though don't have all the refs to hand. It is family word of mouth history that they originated from Scotland and possibly Liney thanks.

Sorry, but I see no Layng/Boyle for that era, using soundex I see 2 families recorded as Laing/Boyle early 1800 but no George.  Did you look in Ireland for Liney?

Are you saying you couldn't find records of them in Scotland or Ireland?
I have records for them in Mayo.
I believe the spelling may have changed from Laing to Layng.
Had not looked for Liney in Ireland

The Parish Registers of Kilmoremoy, County Mayo, Diocese of Killala show George Layng bapt 1775. Father John Layng, mother Margaret.

A friend kindly did research into my Layngs in Mayo and Sligo and believes the place 'Liney' is  Leney [sometimes spelt and pronounced Lyney or Liney],  a barony in Sligo.

Their is a record as below

John Layng, aged 86, of the parish of Liney (or Leonry?), buried 19 Jan 1826 [in Kilmoremoy?]

This would fit with my John Layng b 1740 d 1826 m Margarey Boyle in 1772 Killala

There is a Leny Estate North West of Callander off the A84. A number of  geographical features features around the area carry the name. Liny, Linney, Leny and Lenney are all variants of the same name. There exists the site of Leny Castle on the estate close to the A84.
