Hi

To avoid going around in circles, much of this information was given earlier in the thread - last year!

Did you get the birth certificate?

Also, you could have a look at the 1911 census - www.1911census.co.uk

I see from the census that you quoted that Donald was b. Liverpool but his father was b. Scotland .

There's only one John Mctavish of that age  showing on the IGI - 7th March 1853 to Donald McTavish and Catherine McArthur,     Saddell And Skipness, Argyll

It might not be him as this was before official registration in Scotland so only church of Scotland baptisms would be shown.

1891 RG12; Piece: 2933; Folio 61;  All children born Toxteth
10 Powis St ? Toxteth
John M McTavish 38 Police constable b Scotland.
Catherine McTavish 33 b Isle of Man
Catherine McTavish 7
Marion J McTavish 5
Donald W McTavish 2
Florence M McTavish 3 weeks

I don`t know about this one, it`s only that he is in a Police Station that caught my eye.
Many of the names on the same page are described as Prisoners, but not John.
1881
John McTavish
Age: 26  Estimated birth year: abt 1855
Relationship: Protection
Occupation: Genl Lab
Where born: Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Civil parish: Glasgow Blackfriars  County: Lanarkshire
Address: 9 So Albion St (Police Office)

MODIFIED
It seems the birthplace given as Glasgow doesn`t match the later ones given as Saddell And Skipness, Argyll.
Maybe this is not your  John even though he seems to employed in a Police Station.

A couple of  Catherines, I would go for the first one on the basis that she  is in Liverpool, and her employers have a connection to Scotland.
Of course this needs to be confirmed by certifcates.

Hi again

The Catherine, b. Ramsay,  looks pretty, good  :)

John Mctavish was, I'm pretty certain having looked at SP,etc.  and his age, born Skipness, Argyll so it's worth tracing his parents, Donald McTavish and Catherine McArthur~

They married in Sadell and Skipness 27th April 1850

Following children to the couple - all Sadell and Skipness:

20 April 1851 - Catherine
7 March 1853 - John
5 August 1855 - Mar(r)ion
28 Sept 1865 - Hector

1861:

Saddell Castle, Saddell,  2Argyll
Reg Dist 531/1 ED 1 Page 2

McTavish
Donald, 49, Herdsman
Catherine,39
Catherine,10
John, 8
Sarah, 5
Mary, 3
Ann (9), 1, b. Saddell

All others born Skipness

I've had a quick look on the 1871 but can't spot them straight away.I'll have another look later.

This looks like John McTavish in 1871

Whitestone, Saddell, Argyll (531/1 ED 1 page 5)

John McTavish, aged 18, born Skipness, General Servant in the household of Charles McKinlay, a farmer of 21 acres.
