Speen - Catholic School
« on: Tuesday 02 June 09 14:02 BST (UK) »
Hi Can anyone tell me the name of the Catholic School in Speen, Berkshire in 1851.  The census does not seem to show this although it shows a Priest Rev. Louis de la Poite, 2 schoolmasters and lots of pupils.

ED 1A Houshold Schedule 337 Page 79

Looking at the previous page the street/house name I can see is, I think, Delters Blgs.

Thanks Evelina

Hello,
if you read the district description: Speen Disdtrict 1a, it refers to St Mary's Church and School- that could be a way to begin your search.

best wishes

Hi there,
Not much help, but the Berks FHS 1851 cd has ref
1685/484/79 & 485/80/337
but does not have a name for the school. None of the pupils were from Berkshire and only 2 servants from the staff were.
The transcription has Louis de la POILE as its head, a Catholic priest as you said.  A Frenchman.

Not as it appears to have been a Catholic School. Looking in a C of E Church and school records would probably be futile.

Hello Vicwinann,
I was expecting that Evelina would read the description where it refers to the Catholic Chapel and School- it may not be St Mary's as such- the writing is rather scrawly but I am sure she is interested enough to look a bit further.

best wishes

Good luck Evelina,
I have tried all sorts of searches to no avail! As a last resort, perhaps the Diocesan offices at Portsmouth may be able to help.
