Thomas Winship
« on: Sunday 31 May 09 20:14 BST (UK) »
Looking for info on Thomas's wife and ancestors hoping I have the right line. Here's what I have so far.

Thomas Winship
born Abt 1576 England
death September 2, 1695 Newcastle Upon Tyne.
His daughter Sarah married Oct 28, 1694 Newcastle Upon Tyne to Nicholas Fenwick

Thomas' wife could be Jeanne Bailliffe married June 1, 1658 Earsdon. Also Thomas' parents could be Anthony Winship and Anne Read which they married Nov 12, 1627 Newcastle Upon Tyne. Anthony's father is Lionel Winship born 1575 Wilton Hall, Northumberland and death 1636 Aydon Castle, Northumberland. Lionel's parents are George Winship and Elizabeth ????

Surely the date of birth is wrong?

"Could be" is a bit of a risk.  What positive information have you got?  What occupations did this family have?   Might they have left wills?

Oh dear.   The IGI is a wonderful tool and extracted records are usually reliable, though member submitted ones are not, but you do need to be aware that it is not full coverage and there may be other baptisms/marriages/deaths in parishes that are not on the IGI.  Winship was quite a common name in that part of the world so you do need to double check to be sure you have the right people.   How did you get back to Thomas?    Have you looked at the actual parish records yourself?  What do the census records tell you about the family?

You can read the Northumberland County History online at http://www.archive.org/details/historyofnorthum10nort There is a Winship family pedigree which may be of help.

Hi

Just wondering whether you were aware that there is a one name study for the name Winship  http://www.one-name.org/archives/winship.html

I have no Winship connections myself.

Good luck,

Matilda
