emmigration around 1900 - CROSS
« on: Sunday 31 May 09 15:38 BST (UK) »
Hello,
Can any body help with any information on a Richard Cross b.1870 in Wiltshire England who emmigrated to Australia around 1900? This is the only information I have, and that was from an old letter some 40 years old sent by my fathers aunt. Any information would be gratefully received.
Regards
John Pearl

If you know who his parents you can look at Qld or NSW free to view Deaths Indexes, Vic has a pay site to view. I can't recall whats available for SA, WA, TAS or NT.

Most Indexes that I am aware of for Immigration to Australia are on free to search sites at the various State sites.
Google should help to find many of them.

A quick look at one index in Qld shows one who appears to fit the data you supplied.

CROSS Richard 38 Ormuz 7 May 1908 IMM/128 149 Z1968 M1707, M1708 at

http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research/index/immigration.asp

Another site to look at is http://www.ancestorsonboard.com/

Keep in mind that there are some of my Ancestors, who even though we know what year they arrived in Aus, we cannot find which ship or port they arrived in.

Hello  there John

Also arriving in 1908 on  The Ormuz
on page 1
CROSS AGNES C
CROSS ALEXANDER C
CROSS ESTHER A
CROSS MRS 36
CROSS JANIE 16

on page 2

CROSS GEORGE W 14
CROSS RICHARD 38
which could very well indicate they  travelled together

the ship is also  listed on  the ProVic site
http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=23

If  you are able  to  give parents name we  can  look at deaths etc for you.  It would be very helpfull if  you  can obtain any information  from  the letter  as  to  where  he did go in Australia etc

If you  look at  the resources listed under Australian Resources at  the top of  the board you  will   find losts of links  to  sites  etc for immigration.
kind thoughts Jenn

Hello John, Mick and Jenn

I am not sure that the family you found going to QLD on the Ormuz are the right family.  I see a family on the 1901 UK census who would appear to be the Qld immigrants - all born Lancs, living at St Annes by the Sea, Blackpool
Riichard 31 horsebreaker and general labourer, born Lytham Lancs,
Esther Ann 28, Jane 9, George William 6, Agnes 4, John Arthur 8 months (not on shipping list)

Right age for your chap - wrong birthplace  :(

There is this birth
Births Sep 1869
CROSS Richard Frederick Alderbury 5a/173

and on the 1871 census is shown living with father Wm J and mother Elizabeth and four siblings in Looc, St Feock, Cornwall but born Wiltshire, Whiteparish.  His father's occupation is gardener.

1881 Census back in Ford, Laverstock, Wiltshire and father is now a Nurseryman and Florist.

There is this marriage in WA in 1908
CROSS     Richard F
STEWART  Helen A
Claremont      Reg#13     1908

and this death

CROSS
     Richard F
District Perth
Reg# 2156     1943

and burial records

CROSS Richard Frederick of Mosman Park died 22 Sept 1943 aged 73 [b. 1870]and is buried with

CROSS Helen Elsie of Mosman Park died  26 Jul 1967 aged 79 years  and is buried in the Brethren Section of Karrakatta Cemetery  Grave 0001.

Helen Elsie is noted as Grantee on the grave - this would have been from the burial of Richard in 1943.

Electoral Rolls
1916
CROSS Richard Frederick  Shenton Road, Claremont  Gardener
CROSS Helen Allison Shenton Road, Claremont  HD

1925
CROSS Richard Frederick  11 Burt Road, Cottesloe  Gardener
CROSS Helen Elsie  11 Burt Road, Cottesloe  HD

1936
CROSS Annie Grace  11 Burt Road, Cottesloe  Typist
CROSS Francis Stewart  11 Burt Road, Cottesloe  Clerk
CROSS Helen Elsie  11 Burt Road, Cottesloe  HD
CROSS Nellie Pearl  11 Burt Road, Cottesloe  Typist
CROSS Richard Frederick  11 Burt Road, Cottestloe  Gardener.

Of course only certificates will identify if it is your Richard but I was not going to even type this up until I found the dob for Richard Frederick was 1870 and occupation gardener.   Of course these facts may well be coincidental.

I also wondered about the 1916 electoral roll with Helen Allison as wife and later enrolments Helen Elsie...wonder if her name was Helen Allison Elsie :-\

I searched just using his name, yob and County.  I guess it depends on which online site one uses and there are now many.  The 1871 census is for Cornwall and the image shows the name as "Crosf".  RG10/2289/19/12 and 1881 Wiltshire RG11/2069/77/3.  I will type the whole lot up if you want me to but it will have to be later on today.  The domestic duties await ::) ::) :P
