school records at stockport central library
« on: Wednesday 23 February 05 19:06 GMT (UK) »
Hello and help! I am trying to find out who brought up my husbands g.g.grandmother in Stockport,(born 1880) and as she is nowhere to be found on 1891 census, my only hope is that the school records might give some info.Is there any alternative to making a personal visit?  I would be grateful for any bright ideas(as I live in Devon).-this would tie things up as this is really only thing we dont know about her(other than her father..she was illigitimate).
cheers  Ronnie

Hi
Do you have a name , and any other census details, you never know someone may be able to find her.
I am not sure of the holdings at the library as most records have been sent to Chester records office, and I think you may have to name the school. However you can alway's ask them for nothing, try the email address on this link.

Hello Peter thanks for your reply, I see from other messages that you obviously have alot of knowledge re Cheshire .Briefly as poss, husbands gg.gran  never had birth cert and there was mystery re birth. She signed declaration for pension purposes in 1936 giving info she had.I found her on 1881 census and found she was a year younger than she had always thought and eventually found birth cert, and with that mothers name and poss clue to father. 1881 census Esther Bramhall living with Elizabeth Sutton in Hyde Cheshire. aged 7 months and was in fact born sept 1880 to Eliza Bramwell and given middle name Clayton. She married JohnLea in 1899 and appears on 1901 census as Hester Lea, but we know it is her.Her family still live in Stockport and she lived all her life in Stockport. In her declaration she says she was brought up by Elizabeth Mace/Edith Mace until her marriage. But having searched high and low on 1891 census I have never been able to find her. I faxed the library last year and they confirmed that they did hold the records.I guess if all else fails, one day I'll get to Stockport just to satisfy my curiosity!! Thanks alot  Ronnie

Well thank you all for that flurry of help and suggestions.

I have her birth, death marriage certs and she was born Esther Clayton Brammall on 8th September 1880 at Catherine Street to Eliza. I have a note that there was a family of Claytons in Catherine Street at 1861/1871 census but they had moved by 1881- also haven't established link with Elizabeth's family although there was marriage between an Elizabeth Clayton and Joseph Bramwell  11/6/1872 and  during the 1881 census, this Elizabeth's widowed mother-in -law Mary was living at 28 Catherine Street with daughters Martha and Sarah A. Elizabeth was with husband Joseph stepdaughter Martha and son Earnest. So I believe that Esther was born at 28 Catherine Street, but for some reason Eliza/Elizabeth has not named Joseph as the father. This could be that he was not the father or that there was a problem between them.Parents being Joseph and Elizabeth does tie up with Esther's later written declaration.By 1891 Joseph states that he is widower  and I think he married again  :but I haven't been able to find a death entry for Elizabeth, so it may be that they simply split up.As you can see my original post was years ago - perhaps time to revisit as there are so many more records available these days. Thanks everyone for your input, Ronnie
