CARPENTER
« on: Sunday 31 May 09 11:45 BST (UK) »
Looking for any information on Martin Carpenter and his wife Mary, surname unknown.

Martin Carpenter b abt 1805 Bedminster, Somerset.
Married Mary ?? around 1828.
Possible death for Martin in 1843 Bristol.

I cannot find a marriage for Martin & Mary, would anyone know where I might find a marriage please.

Martin & Mary had at least 4 children.  George, Mary Ann Elizabeth and William.

Any help on this family would be appreciated thanks.

Regards
Barbara

Hullo Barbara,
Have you tried to find them on the  IGI?
Go to familysearch and click on link of LHS of page then follow the prompts.  That may help you find a parish register with their marriage in.

Re their birth dates... 1851 census should help - and would at least show if Mary was a widow by then. Also would give kids ages.. and places of birth.

You may have tried all this- sorry if I'm just repeating what you've done...

Barbara,

Firstly, welcome to the best place there is.

Bedminster is in Somerset so that forum may be able to help you.

However, in my list of LDS Batch numbers at
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,275211.0.html you will find some batches extracted from Bedminster church records.  One might give the answer to your query.

Regarding searching the batches, use the alternative method which can be the easier option. (Added - you will have to give location of course!)

Regards

Chas

P.S.

I've checked Batch C001765 without entering a surname and all the contents of the batch were given.  The years covered include 1805 but no CARPENTERs are to be found.

This can be because
1.  They were not baptized (at least not in Bedminster)
2.  They were Roman Catholics (No LDS films of RC records for Bed')
3.  An LDS member has "used" the info and the details have been deleted from the batch.  Their presence as submitted entries in the IGI does not mean they were once in the batch and a search of other doc's is required.

Have a look at the LDS library catalogue for details of LDS films available for hire at LDS FHC's.

I've had a look on Bristol, Gloucestershire & North Somerset marriage index cds for that time and there was no Martin.

Also had a look at a baptisms cd and can't see a Martin on there.

nameless,
Thank you for taking the time to look up the info for me.

I am going only by what is on the 1841 Census that he was born in Somerset, Parish of Bedminster.
Lived in East Street, difficult to read.

Unfortunately the 1841 census doesn't tell you a lot.

Again thank you.

Barbara,

A person's birthplace given in censuses - especially 1841 and 51 - depends on the question asked by the enumerator.  For instance, what could be the replies to, "Where are you from?"?  Birthplace or where the census was held?  Besides that, the person might only remember growing up in the place given without knowing his parents had moved from somewhere else just after his/her birth.  It is also possible that the enumerator did not ask so just put the census location when he was completing his enumeration tasks at home.

Looks like you have to shop around a bit.  Many of the parishes in SOM have not had their church data extracted by the LDS from their films.  Using Parloc - see http://www.parloc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/parlocdl.html - you can find parishes near Bedminster and using the procedure at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/FindingBatchNos.html you can find out if the LDS have filmed its records and also if the data has been extracted.  This is not 100% accurate though for many batches of data are difficult to find!

Regards
