Haywards in Marshfield 1861
« on: Wednesday 23 February 05 18:41 GMT (UK) »
Could someone do a look-up on the 1861 census for a Sarah Hayward (born 1830 Marshfield) and son Richard (born 1854 Corsham), please?    By 1871 Richard was living with an Elias and Jane Gale in Marshfield and listed as their nephew.  This has yet to be confirmed.

Hi Angela,

here is Richard on the 1861 - this time he is a boarder.

Elias Gale, head, mar, 43, Ag lab, Marshfield Glos.
Jane Gale, wife, 42, Marshfield Glos.
Richard E. Hayward, Boarder, 6, Scholar, Corsham Wilts.

PRO REF: RG9/1744
Parish: Marshfield
Road, Street &c: Little End
No of Schedule: 117
Folio: 109
Page: 22

Might this be Sarah with the wrong age ?

George W, Hathaway, head, mar, 36, Late captain Army Magistrate, Ireland
Charlotte A., wife 23, Devonshire Egg Buckland
Emma Jones, Servant, un, 33, Ladies Maid, Worcestershire
Sarah Hayward, Servant, un, 24, Housemaid, Northumberland
Ann Cleverly, Servant, un, 24, Cook, Gloucestershire
Isaac Butt, Servant, 14, Dorset

PRO REF: RG9/ 1774
Parish: Dyrham and Hinton
Road, Street &c: Dyrham Cottage
No of Schedule: 2
Folio: 117
Page: 2

I can't read the birth districts for this entry, the writing is very messy, but Sarah's looks something like New B***** on Tyne. I had a look at Northumberland Districts but couldn't see anything to match.

Hope this helps

Darcy

Darcy

Hello Darcy,

Many thanks, it is much appreciated.  I'm not sure if this is the correct Sarah HAYWARD, but it certainly gives me something to consider.

Best wishes
Angela

Hi Angela,

I should have mentioned that Dyrham & Hinton is in Chipping Sodbury district and comes immediately after Marshfield on the census.

Richard Hayward aged 6 and Sarah aged 24 are the only Haywards in the area.

Regards
Darcy

Thanks again Darcy.  Could Sarah's place of birth be Newcastle upon Tyne?

Best wishes

Angela,

Go to the top of the class ;D.

The 'New' is a separate word and the second word looks like it starts with 'b'.

It took me ages to read 'on Tyne'  It was a guess as it is squashed underneath the other words in tiny letters.

I have looked at the image again and I see you are correct - I can now read

                                  New Castle
                                    on Tyne
                                    ;D ;D ;D
