Christening look up please
« on: Sunday 31 May 09 00:34 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking for the birth / christening information for Emily Jane HILL born about 1856 in Castle st Bristol (according to census). Her parents are Robert HILL and Mary Ann ? (possibly BARTLETT). Sorry I do not know the parish.

Many Thanks
Gill

Hi

It has been transcribed from the original entry on the IGI which is free to search at www.familysearch.org

Emily Jane Hill   Christening:  25 DEC 1855   St Peter's, Bristol, Gloucester   Father:  Robert Hill   Mother:  Mary Ann

If her mother was Mary Ann Bartlett - the marriage is also on the IGI

Robert Hill
Father Robert Hill
Spouse:  Mary Ann Bartlett
Father John Bartlett
Marriage:  24 JUN 1849   Henbury, Gloucester

Hi Carole,

I had found the marriage but not the christening on IGI.

I am hoping someone may be able to look up the parish records to identify Mary Ann's surname, now we have the church. Thank you

I have also found her sister Fanny Mary Ann HILL on IGI. Christened 25/7/1850 at St Peter's also.

I am looking for a definitive link to confirm the circumstantial info I have so far.

Gill

The transcription is from the original record so her mothers maiden name is not shown otherwise it would be recorded on the IGI transcription

You would need to buy a copy of her birth cert to find Mary Ann's maiden name

Thank you Carole,

I had not realised the IGI records would be a direct transcription. I think you are right I need to buy Mary Ann's birth certificate.

Thanks for your help.

Gill,

The information to be found in the IGI is of two types - extracted and submitted.  Extracted information, although reliable as far as extraction accuracy is concerned,  is not a true transcription which would give every detail but the salient data have been extracted from the records given for most entries.  By the mid-19th C baptism record books were pre-printed (I've seen various formats) and many give the father's occupation which will not be in the IGI because it has no significance in the beliefs of the LDS.

If you wish to search the IGI without being inundated with submitted entries which should be disregarded but might point in the right direction, go to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm#PageTitle where there are thousands of batches of extracted data.

By the way, the answer to your particular query comes from batch number C034324 which gives 665 baptisms from St Peter's Bristol and I will add the batch to my list at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,275211.0.html for it is not detailed in the Hugh Wallis site.

Regards

Chas

P.S.  Use C034324 on the HW site and search for HILL and you'll find eleven entries - some might be siblings of Emily's?

Hi Chas,
Thank you for this information. it certainly makes looking up easier when one know the parish/church. Yes Fanny Mary Ann is a sister of Emily Jane's. I had found these through a more general search. Unfortunately neither record has MaryAnn's maiden name. :(

Thanks again
Gill

Hi

Just to claify the info given by Chas above

Quote
Extracted information, although reliable as far as extraction accuracy is concerned,  is not a true transcription which would give every detail but the salient data have been extracted from the records given for most entries.

Salient data would be mothers maiden name if it were shown on the original entry
