Robert Denham of Norham Mains
« on: Saturday 30 May 09 10:19 BST (UK) »
My 4x ggp were Robert Denham/holm and Jean Mackenzie who married at Cockburnspath, BEW on 12 May 1797. They had four children: Robert b 1797; John and James b1800; Janet b1804. All children were born in Scotland.
I am trying to find information on Robert, the father. As all my research has been in Scotland, I was surprised to find a mortcloth entry in Hutton, BEW:
saying Janet Mckenzie was the widow of Robert Denham from Norham Mains.
Their daughter Janet who married Thomas Steele was staying at Hutton at this time.
I obtained the death certificate in the Berwick upon Tweed sub district of a Robert Denham who died 15 March 1839, aged 67 years. The informant was Thomas Bruce; Thomas Bruce is on 1841 Census living at Thornton. The death certificate gives Robert’s occupation as “Beadle”. In Scotland I would look for information in the Kirk Session records. Where would I find church records in England giving information about the beadle? Also, as Robert was married in the Church of Scotland, was there a Church of Scotland or Presbyterian Church in the area of Norham Mains?
I have been unable to find another marriage for a Robert Denham/holm and Jean/Janet McKenzie in Scotland or England but, obviously, need more information before I can say this is definitely my Robert. Any help or look up would be greatly appreciated.

You could also try browsing the Norham Parish Records available via the Durham Bishops transcripts
http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1309819;t=browsable;w=270;p=collectionDetails
Select Durham*, then Norham. You will have to read through page by page - they are not searchable.

*Norham was a detatched part of County Durham until 1844

Thanks for the info. I had a look at the Bishops Transcripts but he isn't there. However, he may be recorded in one of the Presbyterian Churches. We call this Robert the "Elusive Robert" as folks around the world have been searching for him for years! So carry on searching! Thanks again. Any other advice or thoughts welcome.

Hi Mags,
Robert Dehnam and Jean Mackenzie of Berwick are my 4xggp, although I have no detail except their names from their son James's death record, I wonder if they are the same Robert and Jean you have on your tree ?

Robert who married Jean McKenzie was also my 4th times great grandfather.  His son John was my 3 times great grandfather.  He was the twin of James.  A great deal has been put on the ancestry website family trees where its actually incorrect or not proved to be correct.  Information regarding Robert is as you say is vague.  However, the information I have takes his line back a further three generations.

Would be willing to discuss this further.
