Thomas CRONIN of County Down
« on: Friday 29 May 09 22:39 BST (UK) »
This is a very big ask but can anyone help to tie these pieces together.

Thomas CRONIN (the spelling tends to be awful on the English census - 1891 he was ORIMEN)

Thomas Cronin born 1845 to Francis Cronin. Thomas married Sarah Jane Atkinson in Whitehaven District. Cumberland in 1869.  Thomas died in Egremont. Cumberland in 1898.
His father Francis died at Cleator Moor in 1870 - age 64 years so that makes his birth 1806 County Down.
Thomas had a sister Mary born 1843 - Catherine born 1849 &  a brother Francis born 1854.
Francis & Mary both married and stayed in Cumberland.  Catherine may have returned to Ireland.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks.

Sandra

Hi.

Just another snippet to add - on the marriage certificate of Thomas Cronin a witness is Patrick Cronin. This could well be another brother.

Thanks

Thank you very much.  Could come in useful.  The Cronin's were connected by marriage to the Crilly family of County Down and the name Anastasia was used in the Crilly family.

Many thanks.

Hello,

My ancestor, Patrick Flynn of County Down married Annie Cronin.  They were both born abt 1800.  Their son, John C. Flynn, emigrated to the States in 1855, settling in Louisville, KY.  Several of his siblings came with him.  I am trying to find exactly where, in County Down, Patrick and Annie Cronin Flynn lived.  Perhaps "Annie" was Anastasia, and she was a Crilly by birth??  Thanks so much for any help you can offer me.

just in case its relevant, are you aware of a Cronin chart G462 available at http://www.bordersfhs.org.uk/BFHSFamilyTreeSearchForm.asp

Some dates gave rise to queries examples
1. Catherine Cronin birth/baptism 1846 father Francis Cronin Co Down
see https://www.ancestryireland.com/ credits or join etc compared to b 1849
with hindsight this seems best irish location clue on offer..You need the fullest detailed copy available

2. Catherine Cronin burial1890 Shankill civil parish Belfast see https://www.ancestryireland.com  credits or join etc I checked one source only
https://dof.belfastcity.gov.uk/burialsearch/

1863 Griffiths valuation of Ireland three sources
1. https://www.failteromhat.com for quick index.
2. http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ for detail and map ref ..
3. https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/information-and-services/search-archives-online/valuation-revision-books since 1863
Using 2. above
1863 Francis Cronin ho off small garden map ref 34A  10 shows part of Ballylough Road running from No 51 at the south end junction with the Ardbannon Road. this piece of  the Ballylough Road contains Annsborough National School and a Fountain.  The houses all face westerly towards the Annsborough Linen Factory with its own Gasometer. The post codes are Castlewellan, the civil parish is KIlmegan.
Using 3 above

looking up Valuation Revision Books online at PRONI , I encounted problems, anyway I worked backwards thus
PRONI Reference: VAL/12/B/18/9C (1888 - 1901)
map ref 34A 10 was rented by Hugh Parkinson and crossed out to a further Parkinson as I closed it I found
PRONI Reference: VAL/12/B/18/9B (1879 - 1887)
which does contain Ballylough
map ref 34A 10 was rented by Hugh McCann crossed out replaced with John McCann he is paying £5pa
PRONI Reference: VAL/12/B/18/9A (1866 - 1878) which does contain Ballylough
map ref 34A 10 was rented by Francis Cronin  he is paying £2pa so no real occupation dates shown  No mention of death or gone away.  The landlord may not have bothered telling valuation office until new book started or etc He has vanished unless Murland estate has records

before that the tithes
http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/down/tithe-applotment-books/kilmegan-parish.php don’t list any Cronin etc in Kilmegan  there are 50 = other named entries for Ballylough townland

re kingskerswell marriage source
a Patrick Cronin m 26 Apr 1868 Newry RC Church. Jane Frances Montgomery  I started seeking a Patrick Cronin living in Cumberlamd 1860-1870 and didn’t find one. I also didnt find a Francis Cronin living in Cumberland in 1860 census.  I searched unsuccessfully in & around  Newry for  Francis Cronin eg
http://www.bagenalscastle.com/ancestry/search/details
http://www.rosdavies.com
so none the wiser if a connection will be found

there is a topic Crilley Ancestors-Cleator Moor on https://www.ancestry.co.uk/boards/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=7&p=localities.britisles.england.cul.cumbria covers Thomas Crilly & Mary Cronin who came from Co Down

Finally PRONI has Murland   items under ecatalogue which suggest Clarkhill cottiers are not popular and under social pressure from Earl Annesley heir
Ros Davies describes Clarkhill Clarkill Kilmegan   . just N of Annesley Estate, the town of Castlewellan is in this townland ; 1718 acres; click here to see its location on a townland map; woods; residence of Mr James Murland, owner of Annesborough mills in 1836; major proprietor in 1863 was Earl Annesley V3 p 57 OSM; GV

Murland seems to be in charge of new roads one at least for his own factory  and the railway is coming  Murlands cottiers may be involved hence emigration if linen trade undergoes problems

I don’t think I can help further good luck onwards
