Hyett's of Herefordshire
« on: Thursday 28 May 09 00:53 BST (UK) »
My grandmother was Kathleen Hyett who was born in Hay 1908. Her dad was James Percival Hyett and her mother was Elizabeth Jones. I found their marriage reference on Ancestry and they got married on 26 Nov 1896 in Marden, Herefordshire. Elizabeth's dad was given as a Thomas Jones and she was aged 22 being born about 1874. James Percival's dad was given as Frederick James Hyett and he was aged 24. Depending upon the censuses Elizabeth repeatedly changed her place of birth between either Humber or Llanwarne, Herefordshire.

For this post I'm concentrating on the Hyett family. My great granddad James Percival Hyett, from looking at other members trees on Ancestry was born 24 Mar 1872 in Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. To begin with I had some trouble finding my grandmother until I found her family in the 1901 census in Mansel Gamage where James was a railway signalman.

In the 1891 census I found James along with his father Frederick at Little Cowarne, Herefordshire. Along with Frederick listed as aged 45 there was his wife Alice aged 41, and a 19 year old James there were 8 other children. Frederick and James were listed as farm labourers.

In the 1881 census a 9 year old James along with 5 other children were at Cobblers Point, Llangarren, St Weonards, Ross, Herefordshire. His dad Frederick was aged 34 and listed as a Police Constable.

James' dad, my great great granddad Frederick James Hyett was born 16 Oct 1845 in Llandinabo, Herefordshire I found on Ancestry. In the 1871 census, Frederick aged 22 along with his wife Alice are boarders in Mountain Ash, Llanwonno, Glamorgan and Frederick is listed as Railway Police. I presume that must have been a job similar to todays transport police?

I haven't been able to find Frederick in the 1861 census but I shall mention previous censuses in a further post. Frederick James Hyett I found through Ancestry married an Alice Philpotts on 7 March 1871 in St Owens, Hereford. I also found that Frederick James died 13 Aug 1908 in Llandinabo.

Also via Ancestry I discovered they had 12 children! My great granddad James Percival Hyett was their first child born in 1872 followed by, Alfred Ernest 1873, Alice Gertrude 1876, Walter Raymond 1877, Beatrice Kate 1878, Amy Jane 1879, Eva Mary 1881, Mabel Annie 1885, Robert Harold 1886, Albert Edwin 1887, Frederick Len 1890 and finally Prudence Emma 1893.

I shall also mention the Philpotts connection in a separate posting.

I found my great great granddad Frederick James Hyett in the 1851 census aged 5 in Llandinabo. His dad, my great great great granddad is listed as a Robert Hyett aged 39 and born about 1812 in the City of York. Roberts wife Ann is listed as the same age and born in Longhope, Gloucestershire. Besides Frederick there were 3 older children, Martha aged 12, Alfred 10 and Edwin 7. There was also a younger sister, Mary aged 1. Roberts occupation is listed as Horsekeeper.

From this census I traced my ggg granddad Robert forwards through the censuses. I found him in the 1861 census with his family in Llandinabo but he was then an Ag-Lab. The 1871 census is a repeat of the 1861 census with identical circumstances except I found an older son Robert aged 33 born in Lea, Herefordshire and described as disabled after an accident. In the 1881 census Robert is a widower living at Pool Hullock in Llandinabo with his eldest son Robert. At 69 Robert snr is still an Ag-Lab while Robert jnr classified as disabled is listed as a Letter Carrier CSM (out of interest to anyone I found Robert jnr in the 1901 census aged 64 and his medical condition was reported as paralysed/feeble. I found he died 23 Dec 1915).

I can't find my ggg granddad Robert in the 1841 census but I did find other trees on Ancestry listing Robert as being born 9 Jan 1812 in Fulford, York, Yorkshire and dying 19 Dec 1881 in Harewood End, Herefordshire. Robert married an Ann Field in St Mary de Lode Church, Gloucestershire.

I shall post about my gggg granddad James Hyett in the relevent section under Gloucestershire. This is the link to that post:

Thanks to ChasH of the Gloucestershire board pointing me in the direction of Genuki, I found a page from rootsweb that prints a section from the 1851 Directory of Llandinabo and Robert Hyett is listed as the Parish Clerk.

Hello I was drawn to this post by the name Hyett, I was following what happened to Edith Hope, a branch of my family living in Monmouth (town)  Her father died young, and in 1891 aged 11 Edith is a nurse girl for a family in Newport, in 1901 she's in Llandaff workhouse, then I found a marriage 1908 Cardiff, Edith Hope married Henry Hyett.

I wondered where Henry came from, probably Herefordshire, Forest of Dean ? I would imagine he was born about 1880.  There are a few to pick from and it gets expensive if you start buying certificates for every link you find.  So if anybody can confirm who he was  I'd be happy to know.

We have links to other places, I was out and about taking photos on Friday, and I can tell you Philpotts and Hyetts are buried in Llangarron, I also took photos of Llandinabo, Pencoyd, Garway, St Weonards.  So if you are not local and would like to see these places let me know.  cheers Fred

Hi Fred,

I've only found one Henry Hyett so far. My ggg granddad Robert Hyett had a son Alfred born about 1840 in Lea, Herefordshire. Alfred was a groom but became a mason. He married a Martha who on census records claimed to be born in Farmborough, Somerset. On later census records Alfred claims he was born in Lea, Gloucestershire which is understandable as it sits on the border. Later he claimed to be born in Little London, Gloucestershire which would be Longhope, where his mother claimed she was born among other places.

Among the children that Alfred and Martha had there is a Henry Hyett born about 1884 in Pencoyd, Herefordshire. In the freeBMD I found the death of an Alfred Hyett registered in the Oct qtr 1893. I found Henry in the 1901 census living with his mum and sister at Old School Hose, Pencoyd working as a Domestic Gardener.

Working back from the 1901 census, these are the ones that document this Henry Hyett:

1901 census. Pencoyd.
RG13/2476 Folio 77 Page 2.

1891 census. Pencoyd. Class:
 RG12/2057 Folio 65 Page 2

This is Alfred with Martha before Henry was born.
1881 census.
RG11/2587 Folio 80 Page 4

This is Alfred living with his parents.

1871 census. Llandinabo.
RG10/2689 Folio 30 Page 7

With your Henry marrying in Cardiff 1908, I'm sure like most others you are awaiting the release of the Welsh 1911 census records. Having family in Hay I too am hoping they get released soon.

The Herefordshire/Gloucestershire border, especially the Forest of Dean does seem to be a collective area for the Hyetts. It's a long shot that both Henry's are the one and the same man. I hope this is of help to you, if only by discounting this Henry Hyett.

Best wishes,

I've finally found them in the 1911 census for Wales.  :D

My grandmother Kathleen, her parents James Percival and Elizabeth along with 6 other children are in Hay, Breconshire.

My great grandparents state they've been married for 14 years. James Percival is still a railway signalman working for Midland Railway.

There is one slight change. All of the family have changed the spelling of their surname from HYETT to HYATT? I wonder why James did this?

Best wishes,
