Help with Gordon Highlanders please

Hi

Could someone kindly help me with some information please.

I have a Scottish marriage certificate dated 1914 for a Francis Peter Tierney, aged 18 at the time of his marriage.

 According to the certificate, Francis was a Private in the 3rd Battalion, Gordan Highlanders.

I am struggling to find birth details for Francis at the moment, the only match I can find so far is a birth in Liverpool. There is a Francis Tierney on the 1901 Scottish census who was born in England, so possible the same person.

What I would like help with if possible is  information on the regiment,
 i.e uniform, badge etc.

You can download it from the NA website for £2, but Ancestry have 95% available for free.

The 3rd Battalion stayed at home, so he must have been transferred to another battalion before being sent to fight. The MIC should give you the date he 'entered theatre', ie left the UK. You should post this once you have it, as it may identify his next battalion.

You will have to wait for Ancestry to publish surviving records for the Ts - they are up to the Ns. However, only 75% survived WW2 bombing. If he was discharged early due to sickness or a wounding he may have a pensions file. Ancestry have published all that survive. You should search both with and without the '3/'.

For the other information, just google 'gordon highlanders', firstly with badge, then with history and you will get lots of hits. You should also try www.wikipedia.org.

Looks like Francis was wounded or sick at some stage, so might have spent some time out of the army; might even have a pension!

The date he went to France does not match any particular battalion, so my guess is that he was sent as a replacement to either the 1st or 2nd battalion. If you can get to Kew the roll for the SWB (Silver War Badge) would be my first choice to research. It should give his battalion and his enlistment date. Also his age on discharge if you do not already know it. But you will have to visit Kew.
