Sarah Ann Duckels b 1825 Swinefleet
« on: Wednesday 27 May 09 12:21 BST (UK) »
Hi

I've got a problem that I hope someone can help with.

I couldn't find out who my gg grandmother, Sarah Ann Duckels, parents were so I sent for her marriage certificate (married William Laverack in 1844). It shows that her father was John Duckles, farmer and that she lived in Swinefleet where all the census records show her as being born.

I then found John Duckles who married Jemima Clark, who was a farmer in Swinefleet and I thought this must be her parents. BUT today I have recieved the baptism records for Swinefleet St Margarets and although all of John and Jemima's children were baptised at this chuch there is no mention of Sarah Ann however there is a MARY ANN baptised in 1825. However on the census of 1851 there is a Mary, daughter of John and Jemima who according to the census was born in 1831 but there's no baptism for a Mary around that time. On the 1851 census for Sarah Ann & WIlliam there is also a Thomas Duckels stated as brother, who was born in 1827 which would tie in with Sarah Ann being the daughter of John & Jemima. I have also checked the baptism records of Swinefleet St Mary Magdalene with no luck. All of John & Jemima's children were baptised at ST Margarets although both John & Jemima and Sarah Ann & William were married at St Mary Magdalene.

I'm beginning to question who's parents Sarah Ann's were and I can't find John, Jemima or their family on the 1841 census, or Sarah Ann if indeed she did belong to another family.

Also, on the marriage cert of Sarah Ann it states her age as being 'a minor' (she would have been 19 or 20 when she married), would that have been right?

This is driving me mad! Can anyone help please?

Thanks

Kim

I can see two John Duckels on the 1841 aged about 40 - both are in Snaith, Goole, with Duckels.

This is the only Sarah of an age that I can see:

1841
HO107.  P. 1307/16  Fol 8  Pg. 8

Hook, Snaith,  Hook

DUCKELS
Anthony   79  Publican
Anthony  42
Sarah  38
Sarah  15
Elizabeth  8

all born in county.

Of course, no relationships  -  so she may be daughter - neice - cousin   :-\  :-\

Hi Mum44  ;D

No, but all the other names are right, so maybe John was elsewhere on the night of the census.

My gut instinct is that they are my Sarah Ann's family but I just can't get my head round Mary being born (according to ALL the census that I found her on) in 1831 yet there isn't a baptism for Mary in 1831, only Mary Ann in 1825.

Thanks for that, really appreciate it as I never have found any of 'em on the 1841!

Kind regards

Kim

Hi Mum44

Thanks again for this, I'm going to check that out. As you say it could be she is a niece or something. On her marriage cert it certainly says her father was John Duckels, farmer.

Watch this space.....!!

Further to Mum44's first post - I've found a John Duckles of the right age on the 1841 (ofcourse there's no relationships so I don't know who's who) but this might expalin why John wasn't with Jemima on the 1841.

Snaith

Thomas Duckels    65    Farmer
Ann Duckels           60
Thomas Duckels    30
Matilda Duckels     25
John Duckels         40

Still no Sarah unless she is the one with Anthony Duckels, and still don't know if they are the right family - arghhh :-\

Hi Kay   :)

Saw him  -  one of the two at Snaith, Goole -  which is where, in 1851, John says he was born, and I liked there being a Matilda there too  :D    Maybe he was visiting Mum, dad and siblings   ;D

Hi Mum

Yes, I thought that about Matilda - also Sarah Ann had a daughter named Matilda Duckels Laverack who was my g grandmother.

Think I'm going to try and get hold of the parish records for Snaith.

And I thought that researching an unusual name was going to be a bit easier!

Thanks for all your help.

The burial records for Swinefleet has John Duckels buried in 1863 and Jemima in 1867 - both aged 65. Both records state the abode at death as been Breighton (near Bubwith). This may be a place to check for further traces of this family.
