It is frustrating I know but as mshrmh says, Cheshire BMD has the marriage so it looks pretty certain!
It does look as though 1851 is missing which is a disappointment.
There is the marriage of Mary Greensmith to Charles Hobson which makes her Mary Hobson.
1851 has Mary Greensmith (although age is out for 1861 but she could have fibbed in 1861  ;)) born Rothwell Yorkshire and living Ashton and then 1861 has her born 'Road way' Yorkshire.
The evidence looks pretty strong and the marriage certificate and death certificate would, at least, eliminate them if not confirm them for your records.

Is that a Family Tree record?

If you have his marriage certificate where he has given that information it is more likely- although people have been known the invent names never mind just give the wrong one.

No,it was his marriage record to Mary Hobson, states father Samuel, but as i said,on marriage to Ann,it says father John Jones Whitworth,i cant even find a Robert who is a school master, although its possible he changed jobs, thats why i thought id try & find him listed as working at a local school possibly

Oh dear!!

Well you could try the death certificate for next of kin.
Was he married to Mary though as Robert Jones Whitworth because that would, I feel, confirm we have the right person.

There is a Robert with parents John and Hannah in 1841 living in Dukinfield (not born in county- which is Cheshire for Dukinfield at that time). He is not with them in 1851 in Dukinfield- now Lancashire. Siblings are born Hyde and parents Rochdale and Middleton. No sign of teachers though- occupations are mill related.

I have tried searching for Lancashire/Cheshire/Ashton/Hyde/Stockport/Dukinfield in 1851  - nothing  :(

No not necessarily. I think if they were asked for father's name - they would just give it - no clarification. It happens quite a lot.

I am but not yours  :D When I got back to my Whitworths and Ashworths - too common around Heywood/Rochdale so gave up. ::)

If I were you though I would go for the death certificate to see what that showed re occupation and the informant - probably William though  :-\
