Old schools in Ashton uner Lyne
« on: Tuesday 26 May 09 10:18 BST (UK) »
Hi guys,i wonder if anyone can help?
im searching for info on Robert Jones Whitworth,i have 2 certs,1 marriage & 1 birth(of william,Robert's son) says he was a school master living in Ashton under Lyne.
Cant find any records for him,so i thought i might try to find out if he is listed on any school records as being in their employment, but cant seem to find a list of old schools in ashton.
The first cert was in 1842 when he married his wife Ann Parker,in Middleton, the second in 1843 ,the birth of his son William,in ashton under lyne, any idea's most gratefully recieved, kind regards Lisaxxx

Hi Lisa

I've had a look at the Tameside Local & Family History site & can't see anything specific for schools - they have some old directories (pre-dating your man) & all sorts of interesting things on there which may be of interest
http://tamesidefamilyhistory.co.uk/index.htm

There's a mention of a school attached to the parish church on this link which also mentions another congregational school
http://ashtongrammar.co.uk/history.htm

You could try a search for the 1850s on the Historical Directories site, both for your relative and for schools in the area

Hello,
there is a death for Robert Jones Whitworth in 1868 aged 51 yrs.
There is an entry in 1861 for a Robert Whitworth, 43 yrs but wife is Mary. There is however a son, William aged 17 ys and other children.

If you need these details, I can give post them. I'll check with 1851.

I can't see anything in 1851 to fit.

To be fair there are a few Williams and Thomases (the next child in the 1861 census entry) born in Ashton so that entry may not be them.
However, there is that second marriage and death to investigate.
That is, if this is the kind of info you are after. I can't help with the Schools info sorry but mshrsh has given you some pointers there.

best wishes Lisa

Heywood/Lisa
That second marriage is listed on CheshireBMD as at St Michael's, AUL to Mary Hobson / Greensmith. As you've got Hobson from the GRO index I'd assume that Greensmith is the maiden name & she is a widow of a Mr Hobson.

1851 is the year that there was water damage to the census of parts of Manchester & surrounding areas, including AUL. There is a website dealing with what has been "reconstructed" so far
http://www.1851-unfilmed.org.uk/

There is a listing on there for a Jones family at Bradgate Street AUL where there is a Robert & an Ann (2B 372/9), but no William.

Thanks guys,i had the above record on my tree(Roberts marriage to mary) but deleted it.The problem being i too thought (for the last 6 months) that Roberts father was Samuel(name listed on a marriage record on Ancestry) but on buying marriage cert for Robert & Ann,it says Robert's father was John Jones Whitworth, you can imagine how devestated i was after all the time & effort id put in,so now im of the mind that he didnt marry Mary Hobson nee Greensmith, although he may well have re-married,though no idea who to!!!
