Llwynfelish, Crynant
« on: Friday 22 May 09 12:05 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I remember seeing some information regarding Llwynfelish some time ago and wondered if anyone could help. I believe that some of my relatives came from there, from a farm or Hamlet. I am not sure. The family were William David (or the reverse) b.1610, his son Thomas William b.1646, his daughter Felish William, and any subsequent family.
I know it is a long shot, but I would appreciate any help.
Best wishes,
MDW

1610 is a long long way back and I can not recall see ;Ding any information on Llwynfelis that far back.  Llwynfelis was part of the Ynysygerwn Estate if you are able to track down estate records - that might be your best bet for getting back really early.  David John held a 21 year lease from John Llewellyn of Ynysygerwn dated 14.2.1785.  He was born at Penrhiwangharad and was a member of the DAVID family.  David John died and was buried in Cadoxton 27.3.1817.  By the 1820s a Johnson family (again with Penrhiwangharad connections) was living there.  (shown as JANSON on 1841 census).  The Tithe Map gives Edward Thomas of Danrhyw as tenant but he did not live there.  His son Llewellyn was there 1851/61.  The Jones family - originally from Hendreowen, Melincourt - moved there around 1863 and they lived there until recently.

I would be grateful for any information you may have on residents before these dates as I collect information on Neath valley farms.

@Mart56  Martyn, my ancestor was David John (b. 1754) of Penrhiwangharad, Llantwit-juxta-Neath who took out the lease at Llwynfelish in 1785.  David John's ancestor William David (c1610-1678) lived at Llwynfelish at his death.  That was on David John's mother's side. I am descended from David John's son William Davies (b. April 1789) who was born at Llwynfelish, Cadoxton-Juxta-Neath and died in 1848 at Hirwaun, Brecon.

Have you researched the farm Penrhiwangharad?  In 1715 Isaac Abell left by will his lease of the land called Penrhiwangarad to his brother John Abell.  Isaac also named his mother Margaret John and his sister Jennet wife of John Watkin in the will. The father's first name is probably Abel.  I have not been able to find this Abel anywhere.  Have you searched the leases of Penrhiwangharad to see who owned the lease prior to 1715?  I would love to find the last name of John and Isaac's father.  Their father Abel would have been born about 1650.

John Abel (b. c1680) had a son David John Abel (bap. 15 Jul 1705) who had sons William David (b. c1729-c1805) and John David (1731-1810).  The older son William David took over the lease of Penrhiwanghard and the younger son John David lived there up until about 1760/1770.

John David (1731-1810) had a son David John (1754-1817) who I mentioned above took out the lease in 1785 for Llwynfelish.

William David's (c1729-c1805) sons took the name Davies.

Thanks for any help
Richard Davis

Hello Richard,

This post seems so long ago.  I too am descendant from William David, being the 5 x great granddaughter, being the direct descendant of Llewellyn Davies, who was my great grandfather.  I too am stuck with the father Abel, his sons being Isaac etc. I too got a copy of the Will, it seem to get stuck there.  I did get a load of information on the family, branching out etc.,
but never able to get further than John Abel/Abel John 1650 married Margaret John 1653, dau of John? and Catherine Jenkin.  Not sure if this John Abel/Abel John left a will or whether it would help, as I've not been able to locate one.

Willing to swap info with you if you want to you can contact me off list.

Regards

Hi, I have just read your post dated May 2009 I think you should take a look at this link it has been very helpful for me in my research of the Morgan's (Llandeilo bridge builders) and my Phillips family all from around the Glanamman area. I had to register for Roots chat so I could send you this link.

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/Daviesbook.html

It is a book David Davies's Book
'David Wm Davies the son of William Davies llwunphelish was Born in hirwain in the Parish of Penderain in the county of Breconshire in March 28-1828 '  (p7)

Here is a separate name index

The author commences on November the first 1854 by stating that he is writing a Llufer Cofadwriaeth (Remembrance Book) based on the genealogy of his father William Davies son of David J Davies of llwunphelish near castellnedd (Neath).
[There is a farm called Llwynfelis on the 1841 census in Dylais Lower hamlet, near Neath, at that date there is a Jonson family living there.]

A copy of the original book is deposited with the Family History Centre, Salt Lake City, the original depositor is unknown, a descendant will be given the original.
Its contents were transcribed by Lucy Bodily and proof read by Darris Williams

Let me know if it helps? Or you may already know about it.
Regards Janet (nee Morgan Phillips)
