Denhams (Denholms) of Athelstaneford

Hi!

Does anyone have a link with the Denhams(Denholms)of Athelstaneford? My gt grandparents (x5) were married in Edinburgh, but they moved to Athelstaneford after they married in 1787 and I think had a family of 8 children. Parents names were John Denham(Denholm) and Jean Syme. There children were as follows:
Janet - b 1786
Margaret - b 1788
Ann - b 1790
Marion - b 1792
James - b 1793
George - b 1795
Elspith - b 1799
Katherine - b 1801

I have managed to find Marion's marriage in Athelstaneford in July 1819 - to Alexander Carrick -  and their family, who were also born in Athelstaneford, but I am having difficulty, following the trail of the other siblings, and also in finding the deaths of the parents. Can anyone offer any help please.

Hello Rosie

I quick search of the IGI brings up 7 female children all surname Denham to your couple.

Includes a Jane, ch.  12 Feb 1797, Athelstaneford, East Lothian Scotland.

The lack of males can sometimes be put down to a known IGI anomaly.

There does appear to be a James and George born in the years you mention, (the only ones), but to a different couple in Lanarkshire.

The link belows seems to indicate that MI's are avalble for Athelstaneford.

A search at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (1780 to 1810), only brings up 7 births to John Denham and Jean Syme.  There are no births recorded to a John Denholm and a Jean Syme

Hi Steve,

Thank you so much for taking the time to do a bit of delving for me.  It is frustrating as there seem to be a lot of Denhams in East Lothian at this time - and I suppose it is possible that there are family connections between the villages - but no proof as yet. However, I will follow your thoughts re the MIs for Athelstaneford - perhaps try to get in touch with the vicar again - I tried by email several weeks ago without reply - I might try again. I'll add your found information to mine - thank you very much for your efforts, I appreciate it.

Hello:

In 1851 there are 8 Denhams in Prestonkirk parish. 8 DenHOLMs. Prestonkirk church is a stones' throw from Athelstaneford.

I believe one of my Walkers had a child by Janet Denham.

There are 18 DenHOLMs buried in the Prestonkirk churchyard.

I have been through the entire Athelstaneford churchyard, but unfortunately do not remember Denhams. I do have pictures of the church and yard if you'd like.
