Help needed on the Hoban family
« on: Wednesday 20 May 09 15:59 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

I am really really stuck at the moment as I can't find the birth record for my gt gt grandfather Pat Hoban.

We had always thought that our Hoban's came from a small village called Capparanny which is Co. Mayo, not far from Castlebar, however I have learned that my gt gt grandfather Pat did not; my gt grandfather Denis Hoban was born there along with his brothers and sisters but prior to 1870s there were no Hoban's born there.

I have Pat Hoban on both the 1901 & 1911 census but they don't really help as one says he was born in 1845 and the other suggest 1839!! Pat's father was Thomas Hoban but I don't know his mothers name.  Pat was married twice; his first marriage may have been to an Ann/e Walsh/e and his second marriage was definitely to a Mary Flanagan in 1880.

I've just got back from Ireland and I went to Capparanny and I only found a grave for one of Pat's sons and not him!

Does anyone have any suggestions on where I go next?

Many thanks

Claire

Claire, have you searched on this site:  There are lots of Hoban's listed.

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start

Did you go to the North &/or South Mayo Heritage Centres when you were in Ireland to check the records?

I have sent you a pm.  On brsgenealogy there are 2 other Hoban's.

Patrick Hoban 1843 County Mayo

Patrick Hoban 1845 County Mayo

both are Church Baptisms.  I have a feeling both of their father's are also Thomas Hoban!!!

And don't forget Griffiths:

Hello,

I didn't visit the family centres but I use two websites that they are connected to.

The Griffiths isn't that helpful as I wouldn't know if I was looking at the correct person.  Thomas and Patrick are very popular in all the Hoban families, lol.

I know Patrick was alive in 1919 as he attend the wedding of his son Denis in Birmingham, UK so i thought i might find his grave but i didn't.

I'm going round and round in circles!

Thanks for the help

Claire

Just wondering if you looked up the 1901 Census for some familiar names,

Hoban is a common enough name for Mayo, the ones I know of are in Manulla, Newport, Westport.

(Just insert County = Mayo
+ Surname + First Name.....Leave out Parish, Towland etc and you might see familiar names

http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/census.shtml

Good Luck with your research

Dear DympJoyce,

Yes i have looked up both my gt grandfather Denis and my Gt Gt grandfather Patt on the 1901 census and the 1911. I did mention this in my original post  - I don't see your point sorry?

Claire

I just meant that Hobans may have originated from other towlands, and married into the area.

I live near Turlough but know of no Hobans around there.  If you do come up with a village I could check the cemeteries there for you.

Hello,

They come from Capparanny and there are no Hoban's there anymore; I was there last month and I found my gt grandfather's brother (Stephen Hoban) burried in the cemetary by the tower.

My gt gt grandfather Patt states on his marriage certificate in 1880 that he is from Capparanny.  I think it is possible that they came originally from Castlebar but I haven't found anything to support this.   :(
