Where do I turn to? Samuel Ord
« on: Wednesday 20 May 09 05:32 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I am trying to search for Samuel Ord born 30/11/1783 Lamesley Chester Le Street (my 5xg grandfather)

Firstly I have his 2 marriages - one to Christian Robson in 1805 and the other to Sarah Fisher in 1818
I also have all their children.....

I have searched & spent years looking for his father and mother (i know this is nothing new!!) - his father is Edward Ord - and THATS IT!!!! I have looked in the Pilot Search on IGI & it seems that 1783 is missing from the registers (after trawling through hundreds of pages & hours of time) - I have checked the Birth register through GENUKI & it states "Samuel son of Edward"  ??? I do realise that they did not register the wife or mothers name of the child.

Is this all the information I am ever going to get?? where do I turn next - please?? I am hoping that some kind person will have bishops records or the like

Is there a way of going back further for more information on my tree without doing a  trip to the UK

Thank you in anticipation
Kind regards

Hi Kim

Have you tried Durham Records Online , although not complete by any means, they have baptisms, marriages, burials, census etc from the Durham area and a little over the border to Northumberland. I did a quick search and saw Samuel Ord baptised 1783 at Eighton Banks. Is he yours? I have no credits to look further for you.

Information is taken from Bishops Transcripts and also parish registers. Here is the link.

Hi Kim,

It's frustrating when early baptisms don't give mother's name, but there's a possibility Edward's wife could have been Mary

These Lamesley St. Andrew baptisms within a few years either side of your Samuel may be for children with the same father Edward.  Address given as Chowdean, then Eighton Banks, then Cow Close, and the latest ones from Chester-le-Street church give mother Mary
Of course the last couple of baptisms may have a different Edward as father

27 Jun 1773 Thomas Ord, of Chowdean, son of Edward Ord
7 Apr 1776 Joseph Ord, of Chowdean foot, son of Edward Ord
23 Mar 1777 Mary Ord, of Eighton Banks, daughter of Edward Ord
2 May 1779 George Ordd, of Eighton Banks, son of Edward Ordd
10 Jun 1781 Alexander Ordd, of Eighton Banks, son of Edward Ordd
30 Nov 1783 Samuel Ord, of Eighton Banks, son of Edward Ord
29 Jan 1786 Edward Ord, of Cow Close, son of Edward Ord
15 Mar 1789 Joseph Ord, of Cow Close, son of Edward Ord
27 Jan 1788 John Ord, of Cow Close, son of Edward Ord

Chester-le-Street  St. Mary and St. Cuthbert
1790 Ann Ord, daughter of Edward Ord & Mary
1793 James Ord, son of Edward Ord & Mary

Hope this helps
Barbara

The only marriage I could see was this one:

Chester-le-Street  St. Mary and St. Cuthbert
1789 Edward Ord married Mary Blakelock [Blacklock]

so it looks as if the last two baptisms I gave belong to this couple.   It may be a different Edward, or maybe this is a second marriage for him.

The parish register doesn't give any more information than the BTs do for Samuel's baptism

Hi Barbara,
Thank you very much for your information.  It would seem that from 1777 with the birth of Mary at Eighton Banks to 1788 with the birth of John at Cow Close these may be the children of Edward Ord as we have the names of Mary, George, Alexander, Samuel, Edward right through our line, however, no Joseph or John seems to follow the line.  I was searching on IGI and may have the marriage of George Ord b 1779 to Martha Robson on 28.5.1803 with children Mary, Ralph, Luke, Joseph, Jane & Isabella all born Chester Le Street.  The above names are also following our line (Ralph is my fathers name,  my ggrandfather name and gggrandfathers name) and I actually wondered where the name originated from as it just appeared, so it could have been from the childred of Edward Ord & Mary.............. with my research so far (at least 3.5 years) I have noted that names are very important in the family line.

My 5 x ggrandfather Samuel Ord born 1783 Lamesley also married a Christian Robson (bastard daughter of Mary Robson) in 1805 in Chester Le Street and have been trying to make a connection with the Martha Robson that his brother married in 1803?????  - Its very tenuous at best, but stranger things have happened in our family (my ggrandfather Ralph Watson Ord married Jane Anne Ranson and his brother Edward Alexander Ord married her sister Margery Ranson) so it does happen!! ::)

I understand you have furnished me with a heap of detail, however, do you have access to any other marriages for Edward & Mary......

With kindest regards for all your help ;D

Hi Barbara,
Sorry I forgot to mention, that from the birth of Thomas & Joseph @ Chowdean and not just from Mary on...... I checked Google Earth maps and found that from Chowden, Eighton Banks and Cow Close they are all relatively close (by my standards and using a car) I'm not sure how long by horse and cart if they had one at all - all my descendants have been coal miners, so obviously not of upper or middle class. ;D ;D ;D

Kindest regards

Hi Kim,

Are any of them still around to be included in the 1841 (or 51) census?  :-\

Re possible marriages - no doubt you are familiar with the George Bell Collection? You can check for other Edwards marrying in the area:

http://www.rootschat.com/links/06i9/
(some links to baptisms here too but they may not be in your timeframe)

Of course they may have married elsewhere.  :-\

Unfortunately we all hit these annoying brick walls eventually.

In my Durham research I have often come across the surname Ord - I think it must be a popular one in the area, and also the forename Ralph features a lot in my Durham families.

You can also do a search on Google maps or Bing maps which gives distance between places in miles or K's, but that's on current roads - the ancestors might have taken short cuts through fields.  ;D

Hi Kim

The only further information I have is from the parish record for the baptism of Ann 1790 - the earlier information was from an index:

Chester-le-Street  St. Mary and St. Cuthbert
12 Dec 1790 Ann Ord, of Fatfield, daughter of Edward Ord (pitman) by his wife Mary

so this may rule out the last two baptisms I gave you

Hopefully the information Ruskie has given you will also help
