Thank you Jacquie. My e mail is *
I am trying for many years to solve a mystery. I can't find anything about Francis Gowin apart from the fact he married Mildred Jesson 15th April 1804 at St George the Martyr, Southwark. Her family were from Deptford. They had a son James Gowin baptised at St Paul's, Deptford 23 October 1803. Then two daughters Mary George Gowin in 1805 and Amelia in 1807 both baptised in Deptford. Francis Gowin died in 1808 and his will states they are his children. James Gowin married Catherine Branson in 1833 at St Martin-in-the-Fields and they son afterwards sailed for Sydney on the "Warrior" travelling as Mr & Mrs Garrick. Also on board was his sister Mary who was going to Australia to join her husband Samuel Barnard. (Amelia died at 5 years old). The first child born to James and Catherine in Sydney was registered Francis James Gowen (on I.G.I as Gower), then James Garrick Gowin, Amelia Garrick Gowin, Alfred Christian Garrick Gowin and then the name changed permanantly to Garrick for Kate 1843, Edward 1844 ,Hannibal 1849 and Richard 1851.
I can't understand why the marriage of Francis Gowin and Mildred Jesson took place in Southwark instead of the bride's homeplace at Deptford and I can't find any other Gowin or Garrick families in Southwark? I don't suppose anyone will ever solve the mystery.
