Many thanks to one and all for these details.

However it may/will probably not be him as the MI refers to his wife Elizabeth d. 14th August 1897!!! I will have to do more research  and find some more facts, although there might have been a very interesting story here  ;)!!!!
The idea of him of him going to Melbourne and 'disappearing' presumed dead is a possibility????

I'm intrigued by the inscription :-\ as there seems to be lots of other family details

In loving memory of Elizabeth Claxton
who departed this life August 14th 1897
Aged 72 years
‘Thy will be done’
Also of Robert Claxton husband of the above
Who died, and was interred at Melbourne, Australia,
in the year 1884
Also William George, grandson of the above and eldest
Son of Robert and Susannah Claxton, killed in action (France)
September 28th 1915 aged 18 years
‘Greater love hath no man’

Robert Claxton arriving Feb. 1871 could well be the one!??
Have some notes for his possible birth dates being 1819/1820.
Don't think he is the one who married Martha Borlace!??

Just need to search a bit more for some clue in Norfolk & lots of patience  ::)

Recently came across another 'husband' who was believed to have left for
Australia with a lady - his wife was left behind!

I'm very influenced by this although it's totally unfair on Robert I guess.

Thanks Cando, Jenn & Daizi for all your help.

Had a look at the passenger list fiche for the ship Suffolk arrivng Melbourne 1871 and the only other info re Robert Claxton is his occupation which is given as 'farmer', he embarked at Gravesend and was a steerage passenger. As he was an unassisted immigrant he would have paid his own fare.  The ship also embarked passengers at Plymouth.

I assume you have the UK census details for him in Wighton where he was an ag lab in 1861 and earlier.

As he gives his age in 1861 as 40 (thus b abt1821) it looks unlikely that he is the Robert Claxton who married Martha - however fibs about age have been told before!

I found a Johnson CLAXTON (possibly Cando's find who died in 1884) on an Electoral roll of 1856 so no match there.

I noted his wife Elizabeth on  the 1891 census  but couldn"t find her on  the 1881 but you  never know with the transcription errors  for the census what name she might be under.

Hi all

She is there in 1881 Jenn - with her mother in Malthouse Yard (same address as 1891).  Describes herself as married in 1881 but a widow in 1891.  Can't see her on the 1871 though.
