Port-Glasgow connections

Hi there everyone

Am trying to trace my GATTENS/GATENS ancestors.  I am searching for the birthplace of James GATTENS/GATENS and Marjory MCAULEY/MCAULY whose banns of marriage were published in 1852 in Port-Glasgow. They were Roman Catholic .James was probably born around 1830 and Marjory about 1831.
 Marjory's parents were James MCAULEY and Mary Ann HORN?
There is a family story that they may have come from Moville in County Donegal.

I cannot help too much with your ancestors but John Gatens son of James and Marjory married my Great Great Aunt Mary Ann Kearney in 1897 in Port Glasgow, he was a shoemaker and lives in Hunters Close, the Dockhead and they were married at the Catholic Church.  My Family Kearney/Greeen were from Ireland, County Donegal.

Thanks for the information. I think we may be distantly related. My grandmother was a child of James and Marjorie. I have since found out that Marjorie came from the Rathlin Isles but I'm still searching for James GATENS/GATTENS birthplace. If you are interested I have some family photos of the Gatens family containing James ,Marjorie and a large family. probably taken around 1920   I also have photos of John with his father James. John is wearing an army uniform of a Highland Regiment (perhaps the Argylls). If you want to get in touch  I will send my personal email

Maybe a little "off topic" from what you were looking for but Port Glasgow did not have a proper catholic church till 1854 when St Johns was opened but this church has some stained glass windows which were a gift from the Gatens family "The window to St Philomena above the entrance to the Baptistery is one of several gifted by the Gatens family in memory of their parents and some relatives."
 
Think I have some photos of them somewhere - might be worth a look to see if it's the same family

 Yes  it is the same family. I do have some photos of the stained glass windows in the church and  I  believe the painted mural above the sacristy door was also painted by a member of the family. Am still searching for the irish origins and birthplace  of the GATENS/GATTENS family.  It has been a "brick wall" for a very long time!

Mary Horan, Marjory's mother, and James McAuley were married on Rathlin but records don't exist for the marriage.

Marjory was born on the Island with at least two siblings, Michael and Alexander.

I think we may have been in contact before but my Website got hacked and my primary database was lost through TWO hard-drive failures in the same week.

I have Mary Horan's parents and two of her siblings, Oliver and Margaret.

Also a bit on Marjory's brother, Michael, little else.

If you can help (again) to fill in gaps - GREAT!

 Thank you Andy. It must be disappointing to have your good work undone by uncaring hackers. Yes we have been in contact before and your research on my behalf was excellent.

Just a question. Is the marriage of  Marjorie's parents ( the Horan McAulay marriage) not recorded at all or simply lost? . I would like to record it on my family tree programme-Legacy- but I need to record its provenace.

I have not given my Port-Glasgow family connections much attention recently  as have hit too many obstacles. I had high hopes that the 1911 census might reveal the place of origin of some of my ancestors. So far no luck.

Hi Orkrad
I have been researching the ancestors of, I believe, a second cousin of yours - a Gatens who was my uncle.
He was also the grandchild of a child of James Gatens and Marjory McAuley.
He was born in Glasgow, died in the nineties and was married to my aunt and therefore not a blood relation of mine.
However as he had very little knowledge of his family tree I took upon myself to look into it whilst doing research on my own through the various websites etc.  His wife, my aunt, who is still alive and pushing 90, takes a keen interest.
I have also done some work on those Gatens' who left Glasgow for America.

Hope you have some luck tracing James to Ireland - I'll have a go myself and report back!
