Thanks Lislea. It's good to hear from anyone doing research on the GATENS/GATTENS family. Their origin still is elusive unless someone with a very long memory can help out.  If you post three times on the website we will be able to communicate by personal message(pm). This will guard the privacy of living family members. Hope to hear from you soon.

Orkrad.

I've also been looking for Gatens/Gattens ancestors. My information is that Philip Gatens and his son Hugh lived at Limavady, Derry in 1831. Limavady is only about 10 miles as the crow flies from Moville so there is a good chance they are related. Hugh emigrated to London in the 1830s and I have now traced all of my branch of the family that are descended from him. If you find any more about the Gatens from Ulster I would love to hear about them.

Cheers, egaten

 Thanks egaten

I will try and follow up this connection. I also had a correspondent who said that Gatens/Gattens/ Mcgattigan  appear in the area of Lettermacaward. There are some folk of this name in the 1901 and 1911 censuses with the Gatens name, but my family appear to have left Ireland  way back in the 1830-1850 era., and none of the family names from that area  seem to be the same as the Scottish  ones.

I will keep you posted if I have any success.

Regards Orkrad.
