Parish Church, St Mary Haggerston, Middlesex
« on: Saturday 16 May 09 08:29 BST (UK) »
On the marriage certificate for Thomas Bennick Harding and Jane Coupland it states that they were married in the Parish Church in the district parish of St Mary Haggerston in the County of Middlesex 1 July 1848.

Under Father's name and surname it gives Thomas Harding and written above is "late".  I have taken this to mean that he died before they got married but I have not been able to locate his death.

Is it possible that SKS could look up the parish records for his death?

Hi mumrules

From the details you have given this would be an enormouse search, very time consuming and probably not practical to attempt from this limited information. London was and is a city of millions of people with many many parish churches. It can be very time consuming trying to search London parish registers because of the sheer number of entries in most. To be able to do this you really need to be far more specific with a parish in mind and approximate dates. If Thomas Harding senior died after the start of civil registration 1st July 1837 and in Middlesex then there are 30 possible Thomas Harding deaths registered up to the September quarter 1848. There would obviously be more pre civil registration.

Have you found Thomas Bennick Harding on the 1841 census? Have you found his baptism and possible siblings or Thomas on later censuses with his mother or other siblings? The baptisms of younger siblings would narrow down your search period. If Thomas was with his parents on the 1841 census or just his mother that would also narrow down the possible time frame.

Hi, How old was Thomas when he married, do you have an occupation for him and his father, does it give an address?

Any extra information you may have would help with the search.

It does not mean to say that because he married there his father would have been buried there. It may have been the brides parish or he could have moved away from the family home.

Hi,
His marriage certificate states that both him and Jane were "full age".
His father's occupation is given as "cooper".
The address given is 3 Alfred Terrace for both of them.

Mumrules

Have you found Thomas and Jane on any censuses? Do you know if Thomas was born in London and if so where?

Hi Jenifer

I have the family in the 1841 census in "Skinmarket Place", which does not appear to exist in todays London.

I would appreciate the details for the family for 1851 and 1861.  I do have the death certificate for Michael Coupland for 1860.

Regards Vicki

Vicki

So you know Jane Coupland was born in Surrey.

JANE COUPLAND
Christening:  27 APR 1828   Saint Saviour, Southwark, Surrey
Father:  MICHAEL COUPLAND
Mother:  JANE

Have you therefore found her on any censuses with Thomas? Her parents were not born in London and without finding Thomas on a census and therefore his place of birth there is no evidence as yet his parents came from London and lived in the city.

1851 census HO107 1538 folio 264
3 Alfred Terrace Shoreditch
M l Coupland 62 Head Married Millwright Kendal Westmoreland
Jane Coupland 61 Wife Invalid Married Carlisle Cumberland
Robert Coupland 23 Son Married Engineer Boro' Southwark
Ann S Coupland 23 Wife Married Domestic Duties Shoreditch Middlesex
Ann E Coupland 3 Daughter At Home Shoreditch Middlesex
