Harts of Kew and Mortlake
« on: Saturday 16 May 09 01:27 BST (UK) »
Hi, everyone

When my gt. gd. father William Hart enlisted in the 4th. (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards, he stated that he was born in Kew in June/July 1844, the son of William, a carpenter.

I've not been able to find his birth or baptism records. On the 1851 Census, there is a William Hart (said to be aged 10) with his grandparents in Kew, but no parents.

I can't find a likely father for him on the 1851 census and I can't find either of them on the 1861 census.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, William

Hi William

If he had already enlisted in the army and was serving overseas then he won't be found on censuses after 1851 (if he is the William aged 10 on the 1851 census). His age does move about slightly on later censuses 1891 - 46, 1901 - 58 but is reasonably consistent to his death registration age.

Deaths Dec 1908
HART  William  65  York  9d 37

Did William marry in Ireland? Are the details about his father confirmed by his marriage certificate?
If William was born illegitimate then the details he gave about his father could be unreliable.

The same Hart family on the 1841 census.

1841 census HO107 1075/17 folio 8
Sandy Lane Kew Surrey
John Hart 45 Lab
Mary Hart 45 Laundress
Eliza Hart 19
Jane Hart 16
Emma Hart 14
Lucy Hart 11
Susanna Hart 7
Ellen Hart 2
Henry Halloway 3
all born Surrey
next household with the Calcutt family
Susana Hart 80 born Surrey

The IGI covers Kew baptisms up to 1840. See Hugh Wallis' website

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/

which will allow you to search just on those parish registers. The registers themselves will be deposited at the London Metropolitan Archives.

There is no evidence that the William Hart baptised in Kew in 1819 was a carpenter

1861 census RG9 154 folio 88
Wellsley Cottages Wellington Road St John Hackney
William Hart 40 Head Married Annuities Kew Surrey
Eliza Hart 38 Wife Married Cambridge

Dear Valda

Thanks indeed for this. I greatly appreciate it.
Yes, his marriage certificate (Dublin) also states father William, a carpenter.

Regards

William
