National Schools were basically Church of England while British Schools were their Non-conformist equivalent.  They were very similar and both used "pupil-teachers".  These were the brighter older children who spent part of their time at lessons and the rest teaching the younger children.  The best could be kept on as assistants and by inspection and exams could then go on for training as qualified teachers.
