Hi  :)

The Harold John Finch b. 1898 Aston was the son of Robert and Elizabeth Alice, according to the 1901,  and I think the same in 1911  :-\

Amended  :  Alice, not Elizabeth   :(
Census information is Crown Copyright from TNA.
Titchfield, Hampshire: Reed,  Fielder, Cawte, Goddard.
Kent:  Float,  Cutbush.
Wallasey, Cheshire: Carroll, Ledsham.
Liverpool : Horsfall, Prescott

Hi - I've just found your post on a Google search.  I am currently looking at Harold Finch myself.  He was commissioned in the RAF and also served in WW2, as an Officer, with 101 Squadron, where he received the Distinguished Flying Cross.  I am currently trying to establish the reason for the award of the DFC.  I'm confident it is the same man as my Finch was also born in Aston in 1898.  Ordinarily this would have made him too old (at 45) to have been bomber aircrew in 1943, but with the special duties undertaken by 101 Squadron I'm wondering if he was one of their Special Operators.  Do you know if he had any background in German language at all, perhaps through school or perhaps he lived in Germany between the wars?

As an aside, and if it is of any use, he is buried just a few miles from me - I live in Cardiff and could take a photo of his headstone if you wished?

Addenum: -

These are two seperate Harold John Finch's, as unlikely as that may be.  The H J Finch I am looking at, and who was awarded the DFC, was still flying several days after Corporal Finch was killed and buried in Llantwit.  Conclusive proof that it was two different fellows I think  :)
