Orient line "ormonde"from Brisbane 1928
« on: Tuesday 12 May 09 13:27 BST (UK) »
Although I am still trying to fill in the time my Dad,Edward Frank Symonds spent in Australia as a juvenile migrant in the 1920`s,I have(I think) found him on a ship returning to UK in 1928.His address is given as "Australia House" in UK.Can anyone say what the letters-RAN & DES mean?Although he was designated as involved in livestock in Australia, going out as a migrant in 1925 his employment was "laundryman" which was given also coming back on the Ormonde`s manifest.Would like to hear from anyone else who had a relative returning on that ship.It was a surprise to me to find that I believed his whole time was in Victoria yet (if this is correct) he sailed from Brisbane.Perhaps another mystery to unravel!

Just looking through links to your previous posts as added onto your most recent thread:

...Can anyone say what the letters-RAN & DES mean?....

I don't know that I can help, but someone else may be able to do so if you can tell us what the context is for the abbreviations above.
(looks like 'Royal Australian Navy' & 'Deserted' but I am probably way off with that guess). :)

Did anything further come of this query?

Hi

Looking at the passenger list Mr E Symonds boarded the Ormonde in Sydney not Brisbane. The passenger list indexes often state where the ship commenced its voyage but the manifest itself says where they actually boarded.
Mr E Symonds name has been crossed out in pencil and there are notes in pencil at the bottom of the page that say 1 Forces and 1 Crew. Mr E Symonds occupation is R.A.N. (Royal Australian Navy), The D.B.S. (laundryman) relates to Mr C.N.Tolhurst on the line below. There are other R.A.N. personnell on other pages and others with D.B.S. that are identified as crew, perhaps employees of the Shipping Line travelling to England.

That information should help the OP.  :)
( at least I wasn't too far off the mark with the RAN guess)
