How can I find out where buried?
« on: Tuesday 12 May 09 06:50 BST (UK) »
Trying to find where my John McGurk may have been buried.

His death certificate , John McGurk age 46years died 1st July 1896, Globe Inn Pipewellgate U.D registration district, Gateshead.

His obit. says the same, buried Gateshead.
(he is under Francis J McGurk on the obit.) buried 3rd July 1896.

So where in Gateshead would he be buried? I have googled, but nothing.

Ta Ele.

Hi ele,
Would the Gateshead council be able to tell you where the local cemeteries are and who to contact about them?

Just casting around for an idea...  ???

ele, I find that emailing with a question such as you have gets a good response- it's so easy to reply and can be done straight off.

may I suggest that you give them the name, dates and say that the obit says he  is buried Gateshead?  That shows ytou have done some legwork and also that he is there in Gateshead somewhere and you're not just fishing.

let us know how you get on.

Ive emailed but with no name,- I didnt want to make them feel that I wanted them to search (didnt want to be cheeky!) I did give the year, address so lets hope they can give me an idea to where I can start looking.

I dont seem to have any luck with my McGurks- I am sure one of them is watching down on me sabotaging my every move! always hit dead ends. I always blame it on my Granddads mother, he never knew. When I try look anything to do with her, the comp. normally goes down, so given up on her for a while!!

Let you know what they replied with. Ele

ele, good on you for not wanting to bludge but in this instance I think to give the name and ask is not out of order or bludging.

The council could very well employ someone to look after requests such as yours and to not be given the name might mean you don't get the best answer.
The Council and England right now are still asleep so why not send a follow up email with the name in it? The emails will all be opnened at the same time so that makes it easy for the responder.

Give it a go.

Hi ele

i am in a similar predicament trying to find a burial for a Ninian Hill in 1915 Jarrow.

i was interested in your comment about an obituary. This is not something i have considered looking for and would be very grateful if you could let me know how you found one.

regards
mark

sorry-only just been back on the computer, just always busy busy with the kids.. (not that thats bad, but)
I emailed again with the name ect and that I dont live in England and they emailed, Gateshead East Cem. was the closest to Pipewellagte area and have records from 1862-1998 and I or someone on my behalf was welcome to come and search. I would, except Perth Australia is a little far for the afternoon!! At least I can have a rough idea now where he may be, thanks again all.

Markmid, I got the obit. from the Newcastle Chronicle. I was lucky this time, to find my McGurks, was a nice find. Should be under resources. Hope you find them too.

Have a good day/night, Ele.
