Londonderry Census records
« on: Monday 11 May 09 11:11 BST (UK) »
Are there any 1831 or earlier census results ( or equivalent) for the Bann Valley?.  I am particularly interested in the parishes of Desertoghill, Errigal, Kilrea and Tamlaght O'Crilly.

Hi,
Most of the 1831 census for Co. Londonderry survives. However it only gives the name of the head of house, the number of males and the number of females and their religion. I have an index giving the names of head of house so if you give me the names and the parish you are looking for I will do a look-up.

Regards
Stewart, Irwin, Morrison, Haslett, Murrell - Dungiven area Co. Londonderry
Browne, Barrett -Co.Armagh
Neil, Smyth _Co. Antrim

Head of house would be Robert McCahan (weaver). It could be spelt "McCahon".  The only location I have is Boveedy so the parish could be Desertoghill or possibly Tamlaght O'Crilly.  Thanks for this!

Boveedy is in the parish of Tamlaght O'Crilly. Can't see any Robert McCahons or even any McCahons although there are several McCanns. Are you sure of the townland?

Thanks for this.  No, all I know is that his son George was married in Boveedy Presbyterian Church and George's residence was given as Boveedy.  Dullaghy , Moneydig and Culnaman are other likely possibilities.

McCahan/McCahon might be McKane?? Cathain which is pronounced as Cahan is irish translation of Kane.

For the townland of Boveedy there are no McCahons, McCaughans, McKanes, etc. listed- closest if McCann (an none of them named Robert).

I just checked the Griffiths Valuation.

Desertoghill:
Mc Cahan      Alexander         Trienaltenagh
Mc Cahan      James             Dullaghy
Mc Cahan      John              Dullaghy
Mc Cahan      William           Dullaghy
Mc Cahy        Catherine         Ballylame
Mc Cahy        Hugh              Ballylame
Mc Cahy        Robert            Ballylame

There are no McCahan's in Tamlaght O'Crilly but there are alot of McCahy's including a George and a Alexander in Boveedy.
The Griffiths in Derry was taken over 1858/1859 which is later than you are looking for but it might help when trying to track down Robert.
