Sincere thanks to Shorts and LoganH for that additional information. If anyone has any obituaries or death notices for  these family members it would mean a great deal to me if I could obtain copies. I don't seem to be able to find much in the way of information regarding wills for any of these family members either  other than Ann Eliza Bell nee Parle who was my great grandmother. If any members could point me in the right direction regarding these two enquiries, I'd also be most grateful. Cheers Erika.

Hi

I have just come across this excellent thread and would like to revitalise it if I may.

My interest was initially in Bridget Spellacy born in Ireland c1848 who married John Campbell.  I have come across what I believe to be an anomoly in regards to her parents, and the parents of Mary I suppose.  The shipping lists on PROV show a Spellacy family arr Melbourne per AURORA in 1850 the family is Michael b c1815, Honora b c1822, Mary (a neice) b c1837, Mary b c1840, Margaret b c1843 & Bridget b c1848.  Now then, that's when Michael disappears and Matthew appears.  The passenger list is available on the NSW State Records site and it is certainly written as Michael. All subsequent records (including this thread) then appear to mention Matthew & Honora.  If this is the correct family arriving, and I think it is, can anyone shed any light on this anomoly please.

Wondering also about the other Mary, the neice, who could she be?

Cheers

Bob

Bob,

Yes the name of Michael is incorrect, it should read Matthew. I have no idea why it was recorded as such but I have proved through all children that Matthew is the father's name let alone his mention in various records (NLA, Stawell Historical Society, and so on).
As to the neice, I still haven't worked out where she got to but I am working on two leads at the moment. The Spellicey family (with its various spellings) came from the Townland of Portdrine which is part of the village of Cratloe near the Co Limerick border.
Can you advise how you are related, assuming through the Campbells? From memory John Campbell is buried at Glenorchy in the plot directly west of the Spellicey grave. I noticed quite a number of Campbells buried there. The plot directly south of the Spellicey grave is the REA family which Mary is Honora Spellicey's sister. It seems they were a close knit bunch, inlife and death!

Hi Bob and Gerard,

My Great Grandfather Matthew Poole was recorded in an early record as Michael Poole. I was of the opinion that it arose from someone working off the initial M and assuming it stood for Michael.   Many assumptions were made in those day.  Having said that, I am assuming as well    :-\.

Aussie Bob ;)

Hi Gerard & Bob

Thanks for the information and assumptions ;)  I must say we were pretty sure that Michael & Matthew were one and the same.

We are not related to the Spellacy family, or the Campbell's for that matter, although the connection is, as you assumed, through the Campbell family.  As a child my partner lived in Stawel next door to a couple Esplin & Mabel Uren, nee Campbell.  John Campbell was Mabel's uncle, brother to her father Alexander.  Mabel & Esplin died childless without any known relatives and my partner rescued a few family photos.  We became interested in tracing the Uren & Campbell families to see if we could locate any descendents who may be interested in order to pass on the photos.  Being 'Genie Junkies' we just kept following the various family lines hence our interest in the Spellacy family.

We have had some success in tracing the families and their in-laws back to their roots overseas, which is really as far as we want to go.  However finding a descendent of the different branches is proving a challenge.

Cheers

Bob
