BARNES Family - NSW
« on: Sunday 10 May 09 06:19 BST (UK) »
Any descendants, of
Joseph Samuel Barnes 1824-1878 and Elizabeth Jane Stinson. 1828-1904.
"Yarranjerry Station" near Wagga Wagga. NSW who is willing to help.
I am trying to trace my G G Grandfather, Joseph Samuel Barnes. But have not been able to find any information of his arriving in Australia. I believe he came in 1840 but cannot find any proof of this.
Also his parents Joseph (John?) Barnes. Born 1786 Bletsoe England and Elizabeth Pickering. Haven't beem able to find a Marriage for them.
Joseph (1824) his brother John born 1812 Bletsoe married Elizabeth King Ellen in 1833 at St. Antholin's London. Arrived Sydney 6 April 1841 on the "Abbotsford" (there were 9 passengers in steerage as well.) perhaps Joseph Samuel was one of them?
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Sandra

Hi Sandy

Were Joseph Samuel and Elizabeth Jane married in Aus?  Do you have a death cert for Joseph as it should tell you how many years in Aus - (so long as the person giving the information knew this).

If you give us some more background we may be able to help you more!

Cheers, Judith

Hi Judith,
Yes Joseph Samuel & Elizabeth Jane were Married 6 June 1848 Parish of Yass.
Joseph does not have a death Certificate. But his Probate and Insolvency Papers, state he died 16 July 1878. No other information. He is buried at Wagga Wagga. On his grave there is a Plaque stating he was born in London 1824. Emigrated to NSW 1840.  I have been unable to find a birth for him in London. Some say he was born in Bletsoe Bedford, but a search of this area has failed to find any record of him, or his parents.
In 1855 Joseph Barnes tendered for a lease of 32,000 acres for Yarranjerry Station was accepted, and he held the station until he died.

Other siblings are John Barnes Born 1812 Bletsoe Bedford. UK. Died 1863 in Cootamundra NSW. Shot by Bush Ranger John O'Mealy
William Barnes Born c1815 ,
Susannah Barnes Born 1816, She arrived on the Bussorah Merchant on the 11 Aug, 1833. She married George Robert Nichols 16 Dec, 1837 in Sydney. Elizabeth Barnes Born c1817. There was an Elizabeth Barnes also on the Bussorah Merchant, but I am not sure if it was her sister.

On John's Death Certificate. Parents are Joseph Barnes & Elizabeth Pickering. And that his father was a Brewer.

Children of Joseph Samuel & Elizabeth Jane Barnes.
George 1850
John 1851
Isabella 1852
Anthony 1855
Emily 1856
Susan 1857
Matilda 1861
Eliza 1863
Joseph 1865
Samuel 1867
Helena 1870
I really want to find Joseph's birth, and his parents.

Regards
Sandra

Hello,

I assume you have checked the death certificate for the Joseph W Barnes in Coonabarabran 1879 #5098 mother given as Ann (death may not have been registered until after the inquest was completed) and that you have looked at Byrnes, Burns etc.

Have you checked with the cemetery/church etc in Wagga Wagga to see what information they may have?

regards

Robyn

Hi Robyn,
I have researched Joseph pretty throroughly, from when he acquired Yarranjerry Station. That Death you mentioned was a baby born and died 1879. I had a ten year search done for Joseph Samuel Barnes, with BDM there is no death Certificate.
Where I am having trouble, is just when did he arrive in Sydney, and on which ship. Also did his parents come to Australia as well?
Have tried to search Electrol Rolls to no avail.

Regards,
Sandra
