Death - Sarah SHEARMAN (Née SCALES)
« on: Saturday 09 May 09 22:31 BST (UK) »
Is there anyway to check on a death in Williamtown NSW?
Sarah SHEARMAN (née SCALES) is reported to have died 09 May 1871.
Do Australian records give any additional info such as confirming parents names, etc?
As far as I know she was born c1812 in Brundish and married George SHEARMAN c1830 also in Brundish.
I do not know when she emmigrated, but I believe after 1844.

Hi,
Just to support the likliehood of DAVID Shearman being a child  to the right couple.

In the Greville Directory for 1872,  (just a year after Sarah's death) for the town of William Town, there are 2 Shearman entries on page 552.

George Shearman , no occupaion listed, at Long Bight.
David Shearman, farmer , at Long Bight.

There are only 40 or 50 listings for William Town!
Sue

ADDING. If it is of interest, that the 3 SHEARMAN's arriving per Charlemont which Cando spotted were all  "Cabin Passengers" according to a newspaper report published in Sydney 3/5/1852.

There are also  the odd  tree or two  out  there in Cyber space  which  has  the couple and five or six children arrviing 27th August 1844 on  The Templar   into Sydney

I  checked on  the SRO  for this shipping record  the Templar did arrive etc but no listings showing of Shearman or even a name similar,  but it would seem  that some if not all of  research seems to be well documented.

I  found  this on a public tree

Quote
When George arrived in Australia with his wife, Sarah, he was assigned to Richard Windeyer of Tomago, near Raymond Terrace, as a farm labourer for a period of 12 months, with specified rations for this period. The settlement could be terminated by either party by giving a month's notice. However, if George were to terminate the settlement he was to repay Richard Windeyer the cost of the passage for himself and his family from England. There is nothing to suggest that George did not remain with Windeyer for the specified time.

He subsequently acquired a dairy farm at Fullerton Cove which was to remain in the family for a number of generations.

When George died at the age of 75 in 1887 he was buried at the Pioneers' Cemetery Raymond Terrace. His headstone reads

                          "Affliction sore with Patience Bore

                           Physicians were in Vain

Till death did seize and God did Please

To ease me of my Pain"

Can't help thinking that the birth of DAVID ten years after their arrival is a bit unusual.
Possible.....David belongs to one of the many other SHEARMAN's in the area.
There are certainly more than one  David Shearman

There are burial listings and bdm listings for a number of people by Shearman name, including a few  George's and it seems easy to confuse one Sarah Jane Shearman , one Sarah Shearman and one Jane Shearman.

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for all this help.
The most important thing to me is that this confirms Jeremiah and Celia, I've never been convinced that they were the right couple, don't why just a feeling.
Sarah was the sister of my direct ancestor John SCALES. I've got both Jeremiah and Celia's parents and I'm sure they are right.

George and Sarah's children were Celia, George, Charles, Mary Ann, James and David. Apparently James and Charles died c1844 in Suffolk, England (I need to follow that up and check). The other children all died, as adults, in NSW.
I wonder if the birth of David to George and Sarah in 1855 could be the child of George Jnr - George married a Jane, not Sarah.
