Robert Wilson, KILLED in December 1898 in Haydock, Warrington
« on: Saturday 09 May 09 18:24 BST (UK) »
I am after a big favour in relation to a previous inquiry about finding details about the death of Robert Wilson on 9 December 1898 (originally aged 55 on his death certificate but then amended to 51). Robert died in a mining accident at Lower Florida mine, Wood Pit, Haydock in Warrington district. The coroner involved was S. Brighouse (?). As I live in Edinburgh I am hoping that a friendly rooschatter might be able to check if there was a death notice or even a news report covering the incident published in the local Warrington press. Robert was a drawer at the mine, somone whose job it was to move coal in a large wheeled tub apparently. He was killed as a result of a roof collapse. I know this is a big, big ask but as I am unfamiliar with local titles of newspapers as well as being far from a possible source for them I  am hoping that somebody local might visit the library in Warrington Perhaps and check the archive. Address: Warrington Library, Cultural Quarter, Warrrington, WA1 1JB. I am hoping to find out more about Robert than is revealed by his death certificate in order to establish if he was my g.g. grandfather. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Have you tried this web site: The Coalmining History Rescource Centre. I have just a a quick look and found a Robert Wilson who might be the relative your looking for. There is a section covering mining accidents this is were I found him. Just type in Wilson Robert it will take you to alisting page of all Wilsons that had been injured in Mines.

Hope this helps

It is definately your Robert Wilson, the accident happened on 09/12/1898, he was employed by Richard Evans and Co Ltd at Newton (Wood), Haydock

"Inspection made and inquest attended. A fall of roof occurred capping two bars and crushing the deceased as he was passing through the drawing road with his empty tub. The place had been a little disturbed by a previous fall"

Haydock is not in Warrington.   Haydock is an area of  St Helens which most certainly is not in Warrington either.

There is a book about the Wood Pit Disaster. don't know whether its out of print though.

This is a list and details of the men killed in that disaster.

This  site won't let me post the link it is not in breach of copyright.  Sorry

Haydock BMD's are St Helens/ Lancashire  based.  As I live in the ******  place I think I should know where Haydock is. The whole St Helens area has a Warrington Post Code because that is where our post is generated for delivery.   but we are not in Warrington.

The copy of the inquest  as published in the local papers  is available from St Helens Local History Library  This Disaster took place in 1878 not in 1898. so you need to look for a separate incident.

There are books available with the full history of that disaster including all the names, the amount of money collect and allocated to each family.

One Book is Weep Mothers Weep and then there is  The Wood Pit Disaster.
