Dobbin family of Carrickfergus
« on: Friday 08 May 09 20:00 BST (UK) »
I am researching a Forrester family from the Coleraine
area:

William Forrester born 1677 died 1749 married a
Miss Dobbin from Carrickfergus.

Is anyone aware of a Dobbin family in Carrickfergus?
Unfortunately I don't know the date of the marriage.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Gortinanima

I take it this is the William Forrester who was born on 3 September 1677 and baptised in St Columb's Cathedral.  His parents were Rev Alexander Forrester and Mary Church who married in St Patrick's, Coleraine, on 13 July 1676.  This is the extract from the Cathedral Register -

"Alexander Forrester, Curate of the Cathedrall Church of St Columb – Derry, and Mary Church were married by Mr James Stuart, Clerk, the 13 July 1676 in Colerain.
William, the son of the said Alexander and Mary was born in Londonderry the 3rd September 1677 and was baptised in the Catherdrall Church of the said Cittie by Mr Andrew Henderson, Clerk, upon the 7th day of the said moneth, his godfathers being the Honerable Collenell John Gorges and the Rev Peter Manby, Dean of Derry, and his godmothers Mildred, the wife of the Right Reverend Father in God, Robert Lord Bishop of Derry, and Elizabeth, the wife of Alderman Samuel Norman, Esquire."

I have some information on William's siblings and descendants, mostly related to the Church family connection, but nothing on his wife.  I understood he had another son not mentioned in the familysearch file quoted - Arthur, who married the daughter of Thomas Church of Aghanloo.  Let me know if there's anything I can help you with in later generations.

Thanks for helpful & prompt replies:

Jenny57, I should have known to look at the IGI,
however, it can't always be trusted, but the information,
has given me a useful lead. Thanks.

akanex2: I knew of Arthur but did not know he married
a Church. The Forrester & Church family married through
several generations. Do you know if Arthur had children?

I have Robert Forrester marrying Ann Church, 1827 in Ballykelly
Church of Ireland. He was great grandson of William who married
Miss Dobbin.

A William Forrester was bleaching at Greenfield,
Aghadowey in 1782 and he was of this family but
I am having difficulty placing him in the family tree
unless he was the same William Forrester who's
will was probated 1804 Coolbane, Desteroghill.

I suppose I should post this on the Derry board now!!

According to my newly discovered cousin ...

----

The D"Aubyns came from Normandy to England to fight on the side of the King, when the fighting was over they were granted 2 very large estates in England as a reward.

Captain Leonard Dobbin was put in charge of the Castle at Carrickfergus, Co Antrim, around the year 1200.

Just across the road from the Castle was a house which had a tunnel leading to the Castle. That house is now owned by a Mr James Dobbin and is called "Dobbins Inn".

You can get all these facts from the Northern Ireland Records Office.

Whilst this thread is quite old I must add that the surname Dobbin is more likely of later origin, deriving from the English pet-form of Dobb, which itself was a pet-form of the common name Robert. Of Dobbin ancestry myself  :)
