HEWITT in FOLESHILL
« on: Thursday 07 May 09 19:40 BST (UK) »
Hi,  trying to piece together various bits of info I have got from the "pink" huminex pages on BMD going back to 1739 in Foleshill.

At the moment I have a  William Hewitt b abt 1815 married to Elizabeth Spencer.  I am trying to find Williams parents. The only William Hewitt i can find on the records in Foleshill was born 1819 to a Thomas Hewitt and Mary. Also another son Thomas who died aged 3 months and another son Thomas b. 1825.  Do you think it is safe to assume these are the family I am looking for. How can I double check ??
Also have the marriage date 1818 of a Thomas Hewitt to a Mary Carpenter, as these are the only two with the same names, again is it safe to assume they are the parents of William ??
On ancestry there is a private tree with these two people Thomas Hewitt and Mary Carpenter on (same names) but no further info other than their dob. being 1792 and 1797 born in Foleshill.
Also on ancestry there are two Thomas Hewitt b.1825. one married to Ann and one married to Elizabeth in 1850. Also on my info I have another Thomas Hewitt married to Sarah Turner in 1861. Can I get marriage certs for these ?

Hope this makes sense to someone. What I am hoping for is someone to say yes it all seems probable !  I know I can't just assume but most of it seems to fit together.

Are there any ways of checking this out elsewhere ?

Thanks for any help

William Hewitt - baptised in 1819  - could have been born in 1815 and then baptised at age 3-4? So it is a possible but IMO you would want more to go on than just the names and Folshill was growing so ... Yes people did have babies and then get married.

Have you checked the 1841 census for these people and see if they live in same house or nearby?

Have you checked witnesses at marriage  - this may give one or two clues.

Before 1837 July there were no certificates as we know them now - marriage would give names of participating couple and parish they lived in at time of marriage - along with the names of the witnesses. (no parents names)

After 1837 marriage certificates were started and are as they are now, names of couple, address where they lived, age or that they were of full age (21) names of father only, fathers occupation and the couples occupation.

You can search the GRO indexes for the page and volume number of the marriages you have got and then order the certificates to gain all the information (hopefully) above.

Woman sometimes continued to have children for 20 years so check census for any younger children of Thomas and Mary Hewitt and then get birth certificate as it will give maiden name of mother.

Hi
Thanks for the advice.  William and Elizabeth were married in 1836 at St Laurence, Foleshill. I know that the witnesses where Mary Atkins and William Smith, but thats all I know.  I can't find another William Hewitt in Foleshill so I am guessing its him and his parents are Thomas and Mary. Not sure how I can be absolutely certain.
