Anyone able to do a look up for Obituary notice in Glasgow
« on: Wednesday 06 May 09 15:33 BST (UK) »
Hi - I have been working on this but need to get to the Mitchell Library in Glasgow to do a look up, however I have seen others posting look up requests, so thought I would do so too.  My great Aunt, Agnes Young was murdered at the age of 24 in 1929 at 48 Gallowgate, Glasgow.  Her home address was 116 Drygate, Glasgow.  I've been phoning round lots of places and seems my best bet is the Mitchell Library however I'm struggling to get there until July and it will be 80 years this year on 1st July since GA Agnes died and we would love to find her grave and pay our respects.  If anyone got time while at the library would be sooooo grateful.  Thanks, Eva

Hello egar,

The incident was reported in the Times newspaper. Perhaps you have already seen this:

Tuesday July 2 1929

GLASGOW SHOOTING AFFAIR

A woman named Agnes Young, of Drygate, Glasgow was shot dead and a man named Daniel Owens of London Road, Glasgow was wounded in Glasgow last night. It is stated that, while they were ina public house in the Gallowgate in the east end of the city, a man without warning pulled a revolver from his pocket and shot the woman in the throat. She collapsed and while she lay on the ground the man fired two more shots into her body. Apparently she was killed by the first bullet. Another man in the public house ran to the woman’s assistance. He was shot by the assailant, who then rushed into the street and tried to escape. A crowd gave chase and the man brandished his revolver but was overpowered. The alleged Assailant was taken into custody and charges of murder and attempted murder were preferred against him.

Hi - thank you, yes, I have seen this.  This was my great aunt.  She did have a son but he never knew about his mother and he has long since passed away.  We're hoping that somewhere in Glasgow there is a grave for her so that we can pay our respects on the anniversary which is 1st July (80 years this year).  I'm trying to find where she was buried - but as it is a 'big skeleton in the closet' and was so long ago all options point to going to Mitchell Library to trace local papers for the obituary if there was one.  We got the information via the Scotsman online archives (yet more money - I've spent a fortune) but they don't have anything else on her.............eva

Leighton - sorry pressed post before I meant to - was the Times a Glasgow newspaper at the time?  Can I look online at their archives?  The credit card is out again....

egar,

The transcription was from the London Times newspaper. I have free access to this paper through my local library. Perhaps your own library also has this service.

If you wanted a copy of the page, send me a pm with an e-mail address and I can send it to you. I could not find any other items on this case.
