Miners Arms

Does anyone happen to know what happened to the Miners Arms, a pub which appears on the 1881 census as being on Belford Road, Tweedmouth? For that matter, anything at all about the Miners Arms. I can't even trace Belford Road.

That's pretty,Carol - thanks for B'day greeting. I hope Edinburgh was a mistake, though  ;D.

I've now been told that the pub was on the way to Scremerston, but any other juicy tidbits would still be welcome.

If you have a look at this site http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and search Tweedmouth you can look at the old maps of the town. Belford Road is shown on the 1856 - 1865 map running south from the side of Tweedmouth Railway Station (i.e. in the direction of Belford).
The Miners Arms shows up on the same E.D. in 1881 as Cemetery Lodge and  Sunnyside House and you can see these clearly on the 1894 - 1899 map. Sadly the Miner's Arms isn't shown on the map.

So it is. I hadn't looked quite far enough south. I see it was still named the Miners Arms on the 1980 - 1994 map.

Hello Mike,


I lived just outside Scremerston until 1959 and remember the Miner's Arms, although not as a customer (I was 10).  It was on the outskirts of Scremerston as the road went up the hill towards Berwick.  The cemetery was on the other side of the hill so I regard the pub as being Scremerston rather than Tweedmouth.

I diverted through Scremerston for nostalgia's sake on a visit to Edinburgh in about 2002, and the pub had been converted to a private house.  I could find no photographs on the Northumberland Archives site, so I suspect that your best chance may be to contact the Berwick Advertiser.
