Mary Ellen Goodfellow 1896
« on: Tuesday 05 May 09 08:13 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I am wondering if anyone can put me on the right road here..... I am trying to trace Mary Ellen Goodfellow, born 1896 in Spennymoor, Durham to the parents of Philip and Rachael Goodfellow, who lived in Birtley Durham.  Can any one help me put in my missing peices of the jigsaw by telling me who she married (possibly  into Appleton or Walker families) and when she died.  I would be sooooo grateful as this is my only missing link now.

Many athanks,
Lynda

Hi Lynda.... and to ask you whay may seem an insultingly obvious question :-[
have you checked the freebmd for her marriage? Once you get her married name then you can find her death more easily- assuming she wasn't widowed and then remarried ::)

It maybe there on freebmd as they are going great guns with 20thC transcriptions...

Hi Charlotte,
I am not sure how to use the site that you have mentioned  (I know) I have however, just ordered the marriage certs for both Walker and Appleton marriages.  Most of my research  has been done of the scottish sites and while I have a basic understanding of the english sites, I am never sure how to confirm if this is the person or not.....if you know what I mean.  Anyway I have ordered the certificate with the stipulation that her fathers name is on it ::).

Hi Lynda

I see you have picked out the two most likely Mary E Goodfellow marriages, one Sunderland, one Newcastle, although the freebmd site is not fully transcribed so there could be more possibilities.  It's a good idea to order the cert stipulating the father's name.  In the 1901 census there are two Mary Ellen Goodfellows b. 1896 , so it would be easy to get the wrong one without checking.  As Charlotte said, once you know her married name, (if she married!) then perhaps we can help to find her death registration

Just for future information re ordering certs, you can either ask the local register offices to check for parents' names before you buy, (here's a list of Register Offices http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/regoff.html )
or you can do the same at the GRO  online:  www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ There is a part of the form where you can ask them to check references and they say that if you have done your own searching in the GRO indexes and are unsure about the entry, they offer reference checking online. The charge is £3 which is included in the £7 cost of the certificate if it's correct.  A certificate will only be issued if the entry matches the checking point you give them.

Kind regards
Barbara  :)

Hi Barbara,

Thanks for this. In Scotland you can veiw an entry and make sure that all the details.   are ok before you order the cert.  In most cases I have just printed off the entry and attatched this to my files  However, I now have a new  Uncle, who is very keen to find out what happened to Mary Ellen, as he does not remember her when he was growing up....the mystery deepens as he grew up with her brother and his wife.  mmmmmmmm we shall just have to wait and see .... :o

regards,
Lynda

Hi Lynda,

When you get the certificate (if it's the right one) please do come back and post the details, then hopefully we'll be able to help you further

Kind regards

Once again thank you....I should mention that Mary Ellen is my gt grandmother and my Uncles Granma, so it is important for us to find out.  I have just spent 2 hours speaking to my uncle and he is wracking his brain to try and remember some of the details of his earlier life.  After my Granma died in Leeds in 1937, ( he was only a few weeks old) he was brought up in Birtley  by Mary Ellens brother Jim and his wife Alice...(the lady who registered Olives birth).  He remained there until he was about 11 and then Uncle Jim died  in 1948 and he was sent to a childrens home in Durham as Alice could not manage him, (or that is how he remembers it).  My Grandfather was apparently in the Navy for some of this time.  (He has fond memories about JIm and Alice.)

So the certs are due on the 11th so I will post details if they are the correct one.... :D

Regards,
Lynda

Lynda, I have just received an message from you re Goodfellow's but for the life of me can't see how to reply to it so have to try here.

I can't see a connection to your family. My family arrived in County Durham from Alston, Cumberland during the mid 1800's. Prior to that the family came from Catton in Northumberland and Penrith in Cumberland.

Hi Daphne,
I suspect that there may be a connection further back.  Apparently our Goodfellows came from Cumbria in the 1840's.  They were Agricultural Labourers.  They came to Birtley and some of them worked in the pits there.  I have not done much research as yet on this side of my family as I am caught up in my Mary Ellen search.  My brick wall at the moment I am afraid.
Keep in touch,
Kind regards,
Lynda
