Bastardy Recongnizance record
« on: Tuesday 05 May 09 03:23 BST (UK) »
H:

I am really excited tonight as I just received today the Bastardy record for my Edward Richardson. It lists who is his father was.. I never thought I would be able to get any further back then Edwards birth.

My question is. Can I know follow up on his father's family and put it on my family tree?  Edwards parents did not marry and his mother married when Edward was 4 years old.  If I can, then I think I have found some one that is researching Edward's fathers family.

I hope this makes sense.

Cheers
Anne

That is good news.    As it is proof of his father then following that tree makes perfect sense.   Just miss out the marriage bit!

Great news, Anne.

May I ask - did you get the record through East Riding Archives or the Borthwick Institute? And, how did you find it?

I'm notoriously bad at searching online archive catalogues (it's a knack!!  :-[) . I've searched the ERY catalogue for bastardy records to do with a branch of my family but had concluded that there was nothing to find because I couldn't find anything on the search. I know a lot of the records didn't survive so wasn't too surprised.

However, I've just searched the ERY site for your Edward Richardson and come up with nothing (told you I was good!!) so am beginning to wonder if I've missed something!!  ::)

Mind you, it doesn't help that my family are called Bishop - and when you search for Bishop, you get all the ecclesistical bishop references as well!  :-[

Thank you Andrea and Jill for the replies...  I will certainly will following the family of Edward's Father.  Jill: a distant rellie found this record and e-mailed it to me yesterday. I never thought I would find out who is father was. Gives me hope that I can find the father of my Sarah Frankish. He says the documents are held at the East Riding Of Yorkshire Archives and Records Services.

It is a cold windy day here and looks like rain so going to spend it researching..

have a good day

Cheers

Thanks Anne - same weather here which is why I'm also on the PC (any excuse!).

I shall have to ask at the East Yorks Record Office next time I go, and not presume that, just because I'm totally incapable of searching their online catalogue, doesn't necessarily mean there are no Bishop bastardy records to be found!

Hi Jill:

Still raining here, yes you may get lucky...  I am hoping to get to the record office when I am in Yorkshire in July.

Cheers

Hi Jill

The online catalogue has a bastardy record for a Rebecca Bishop c1815.

Put 'bastardy bishop' in the 'any text' search box and in the 'word options'  tick the 'AND' box, then search

hope this helps

Bee - you absolute star!!

Rebecca Bishop is my 3x great grandmother, and she was a bit of a girl, to say the least!

She never married, but by my reckoning, she had 9 children. I'm still ploughing through the search results on the ERY Archives website but so far have found Bastardy Examinations in respect of 3 of the children (by 3 different men!  ::)) - including her son George who is my 2x great grandfather. And I've actually got the name of his father!! Yippee, another line to trace!!

I'd always sort of assumed that the children might have all (or mostly) been the offspring of Rebecca and one man, who was perhaps married or her employer or something similar and who kept and maintained her and the children. Looks like I was wrong!

Can't wait to get back to the search later this afternoon.

Wow! I'm so glad I asked!  ;D ;D
