Piddington baptism - Hillyard abt 1800 COMPLETED thanks
« on: Sunday 03 May 09 19:17 BST (UK) »
Hi, I've been in touch with helpful folks on this board before, but as this is a request for a look up I thought it best to be posted here. I found a couple of Hillyards of interest in Piddington in the 1841 / 51 census and wondered "who they belonged to".

One is Andrew Hillyard age 55 in 1851 so b abt 1795/6 Piddington  (wife was Sophia)

The other is James Hillyard age 51 so b abt 1799/1800 Piddington (wife Lucy in '41, widow in '51).

If anyone has infomation on their baptism / parents I'd be very grateful.

best regards
John Webster

Hi John

I've extracted quite a lot of Hillyard info from the Piddington registers as my great great grandmother was Hannah Hillyard.   Her parents were James Hillyard & Lucy Clark.

Andrew Hillyard was the natural son of Alice Hillyard.   He was baptised at Piddington on 14th December 1794.   Alice also had a son called William, who was baptised 15th September 1799.

James Hillyard was the son of Edward & Hannah Hillyard.   He was baptised at Piddington on 13th August 1797.   Edward & Hannah also had Susannah, baptised 17th February 1799.

In my notes I've written that James Hillyard married Lucy Clark at Piddington on 10th November 1818, but that info isn't in my extracts from the parish register!   Either I missed it out or someone else gave me the information and I assumed Piddington, so sorry that's a bit unclear.

What I do have from the register is that James Hillyard married Elizabeth Shrewsbury 11th May 1817.   I haven't "done" the burial registers yet, so can't say for certain that she was a previous wife who died, but he's the only James Hillyard I have.

Andrew Hillyard married Sophia Whitbread 18th November 1822.

I hope this helps and if you would like more of my extracts just let me know.

Diana

Amendment!

I have now found the marriage of James Hillyard to Lucy Clark at Piddington!   It was one of 3 that were inserted at the end of the register and I had kept it in that order in my notes.   Both were of the parish of Piddington and made their mark.   The witnesses were George Clark and Susannah Clark.

Going back to the marriage of James Hillyard & Elizabeth Shrewsbury, they were otp too and made their mark.  The witnesses were William Shrewsbury & Sarah Shrewsbury.

Regarding the marriage of Andrew Hillyard my notes say he signed the register and Sophia Whitbread made her mark.  They were both otp.  The witnesses were Benjamin Whitbread and Sarah Ann Hillyard.

Hi John - again!

Sorry, I lied about the burial register bit as I have now found the following:

Elizabeth Hillyard was buried at Piddington on 3rd July 1817, age 28.

She must have been wife no. 1.

Diana

Diana

Thanks for the reply, I've recently done a check of nearly all Piddington Hillyards as the baptism of my gg gfather Thomas Hillyard (b about 1803 Piddington, later moved to Harbury, Warwicks) couldn't be found in the Piddington registers, however, a nephew John Hillyard was living with Thomas's family in Warwickshire in 1861, so as he was a Hillyard, his father would have been a brother of Thomas. As a result I had to make sure I got the right John H and checked out every Hillyard family I could.

I found that John's father was Charles Hillyard, mother Mary, and Sandy kindly found Charles's baptism in 1800, parents Samuel & Rachel, so "my" Thomas must share the same folks!   They also had daughters Sarah Ann in 1802 and Ann in 1806 and at least one other son William baptised in 1815.

I also found 2 other male Hillyards, Andrew and James, born around 1795 -1800 in the 1851 census. I was hoping  one or other may have been off-spring of Samuel & Rachel, but as you found out they had different parents. Still if we were able to go further back I'm sure all these Hillyards would eventually share the same line somewhere!

You mention James Hillyard married Elizabeth Shrewsbury in 1817, then Lucy later (she appears in 1841) , but by 1851 James is a widower again, and I noticed a Jane Shrewsbury is shown as housekeeper, and then in 1861 as James's wife, so it looks like he married 3 times, and twice to a Shrewsbury !

best wishes

John

Hi John

It was nice to hear from you and I hope you manage to make more progress with your Hillyard research.

I've been concentrating on my Hakes family from Piddington so far, but your query has prompted me to look at the Hillyards more closely.   Next time I get to Northampton Record Office I will certainly be looking out for them, and the Shrewsburys too.   I'm sure Jane and Elizabeth would have been relations of some sort but then the whole village seems to have been inter-related in those days!

It doesn't surprise me that you can't find your John Hillyard's baptism at Piddington.   Quite a few people I hoped to find are "missing" and there don't seem to be any Bishop's Transcripts, which just might have helped to fill in any gaps.   Maybe we will both be lucky and find them in another nearby parish one day!

Regards,

Diana

Hi John and Diane,
My Great grandfather is William Hillyard and I believe his father was Thomas Hillyard of Piddington making Thomas my 2nd Great grandfather and Williams mother being Elizabeth Shaw of Harbury, Warwickshire.  Thomas and Elizabeth married on 1st August 1854 and William had 11 siblings.

Having said all of this, there is a doubt.....William was born about October/November 1852, christened 1st November, William Shaw son of Elizabeth Shaw who married Thomas Hillyard.  I am waiting for Williams birth certificate to arrive although I do not expect the father to be listed.  I have a 4th cousin who also has this theory, he came about it completely seperately to me.

At present I have not visited Northampton to investigate Piddington records and I have been using the IGI register (as well as official BMD certificates) which is useful but something I treat with a degree of distrust as I have found some errors.

I would be interested in any family history of Thomas.  I have detailed information of Williams descendants.

John

Hi John thebargee2

It's nice to hear from you and I really hope that you will get some joy from William's birth certificate.   So far I haven't looked much at the HILLYARD family of Piddington as I have been concentrating on the HAKES side as well as various other branches of my tree around the country.  There are just never enough hours in the day.

I do intend to get back to Northampton Record Office eventually and will definitely be looking at the HILLYARDs then.   I will be interested to hear how you get on in the meantime.

Best wishes,

Diana

Hi John theBargee2,

I think you are on the right track, although only William's birth cert will prove it!.

I have William b about 1852/3 in Harbury, based on the 1861 census of Harbury. The parents are shown as Thomas Hillyard b Piddington about 1833 and Elizabeth b Harbury about 1832. According to IGI a Thomas Hillyard and Elizabeth Shaw married 1 August 1854 - although as you say there can be errors.

Anyway the Thomas Hillyard b about 1833, is a sister of "my" Jane Hillyard b about 1830 also in Piddington.  Then later I have Jane age 20, and Thomas 18 still single with parents Thomas and Hannah in Harbury in the 1851 census.

I believe Hannah's maiden name was also Shaw, but I don't know what connection she might have with her daughter in law Elizabeth Shaw

good luck

John

Hi John and Diana,
Williams birth certificate shows he was born William Shaw on the 15th March 1852 to mother Eliza Shaw, resident of the Union Workhouse, Southam, Warwickshire.  There is no father shown.

So the lineage is inconclusive.

However, it is my understanding that during those times (and many years after) when a boy got a girl pregnant he would be expected to marry her.  Is this what Thomas did?  I would like to think so!   There is only one way to prove the lineage and that would be through DNA testing of myself and you John!!!

John, what details, if any do you of the descendents of Thomas and Eliza and what details do you have of Thomas's ancestors?

Regards

John

Latest news!!!!

Eliza was working for a farmer and his wife on a farm at Ryton On Dunsmore at the time of the 1851 census (March 1851) and apart from Eliza, the farmer and his wife the only other resident at that time was a William Seaton, 17 yrs old,  Eliza was 19 yrs old.  Theory - two teenagers a long way from home, working hard but lonely and decide to enjoy each others company.  Eliza would probably have been sacked once her pregancy came to light, then possibly disowned by her parents hence she ends up in the Union Workhouse where William Shaw was born.  Her son being named after the father???  Thomas Hillyard came along and took on Eliza and her son even though William was not his.

Well we shall never know for sure.

John if Thomas is your 2nd Great grandfather and Eliza is my 2nd great grandmother you and I are related.  Are you on Genes Reunited?
