Edgar family
« on: Sunday 03 May 09 15:51 BST (UK) »
Hi there - I am on the trail of the Edger/Edgar family and have been searching in Cumberland pre 1844 and have been quite successful (with a great deal of help from the roots forum).  I am giving that a rest for a while and trying to fill in some gaps at the DUrham end.
My grandfather was John Edgar/Edger who was apparently born in a little house in Tow Law in 1875.  His father's name was Robert.  Robert was born in Cumberland and it would seem that by the time John was 6, he was living back in Cumberland with his father and ? step mother.
Family rumours have it that John's mother died when he was 4 days old and no-one knows a) wether she and RObert were married or b) John's mother's name (or maiden name).
I am told that John's mother was buried in Stanley churchyard.

Can anyone help me to find either John's mother's name, maiden name or anything about her.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Tricia

Have you tried sending for John's birth certificate?

This might be it BUT I'm not familiar with Durham so don't know if it's close enough.

1Q 1875 Weardale, Durham 10a 351 - Was his birthday in late 1874 or the early part of 1875?

If you ordered Robert's marriage certificate to Mary Ann this should tell you if Robert had been married previously.

This could be it . . . but it's a long shot.

Robert Edger - and on the same page Mary Ann Downie

Hi everyone,

Many thanks for the help this far ..... I have the details from the cenus's (censi ??) but I didn't have the details of marriages and occupations so many many thanks for that.

I have got back as far as looking for the father of a Robert Edger who married Mary Crosthwaite in St. Bees (solemnised 16/10/1716) - its seems that the family were prolific breeders and seemed to have all called their boys Robert, John, Thomas, William, Peter or Jonathan and then they spread out all over the Workington/Whitehaven/St. Bees/Harrington area.  So I have a real task with that side.

I thought it would be fairly simple to find the name of John's mother in Tow Law - I have questioned aunt and mother and John's mother definitely died 4 days after he was born and was buried in Stanley although I did query why she was buried in Stanley if they lived and John was born in Tow Law.  The general concensus of opinion is that maybe the mother was from Stanley but I think this is just general thoughts.   I was going to visit Stanley churchyard but then discovered that the particular church wasn't built until after John's mother had died ???

I think I will email Durham Records Office because they haven't as yet put the deaths onto the computer database.  Ordinarily I would visit but broken leg prevents driving at the moment.

Any futher help or suggestions through this forum would be greatly appreciated and many thanks for your help so far.

Hi Jackie,

Sorry its taken me so long to get back.  So, you are looking for a member of the Edgar family - what information have you got so far regarding full name, date of birth, place of birth etc. etc. Do you have a date or place of birth of your mother and what was the family name, you mention a surname but was that mum's birth name or did your gran later marry to that name.  As you may have noticed, there are many Edgars in that area and its getting the right one - cos there are lots of Josephs and Georges - that will be the problem, so any info you have will help.

Get back soon

Kind regards
Tricia aka Morgany
